South Korea exported $34.12 billion of semiconductors during the first 20 days of September, up 259% from a year earlier, according to Korea Customs Service data. Total exports reached a record $71.4 billion for the period, meaning chips accounted for nearly half of everything the country shipped abroad.
The numbers helped lift semiconductor stocks globally on Monday. Intel, Micron and AMD all gained in U.S. premarket trading, while Asian chipmakers also strengthened as investors reassessed whether the recent AI selloff had gone too far.
AI Demand Is Showing Up in Physical Trade
The important part of South Korea’s data is not simply that exports increased.
Semiconductor shipments reached a record $34.1 billion, while their share of total exports climbed to 47.8%, another record for the Sept. 1–20 period. Shipments to China more than doubled to $16.6 billion, while exports to the U.S. jumped 118% to $14.2 billion.
That provides a useful counterpoint to last week’s global AI stock selloff, when Nvidia, SK Hynix, Intel and SoftBank fell sharply amid renewed concerns about valuations and the speed of AI development.
The latest data suggests the underlying hardware cycle is still expanding even while investors debate whether AI stocks have become too expensive.
Memory Chips Are Becoming the AI Demand Gauge
South Korea matters because Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix sit at the center of the global memory supply chain, particularly the high-bandwidth memory used in AI accelerators.
The latest rally also received help from falling oil prices, which eased some of the inflation and bond-yield pressure weighing on expensive technology stocks. Brent crude slipped toward $102 after trading above $109 last week.
