Crypto commentator JackTheRippler has made a strong claim about the future of the Crypto CLARITY Act, saying that 7 to 10 Democratic senators have agreed to support the legislation. His statement comes just days before the Senate is expected to take up a procedural vote that could determine whether lawmakers move forward with the bill.
“WOW! 7 to 10 DEMOCRATS have agreed to VOTE in favor of the Crypto CLARITY Act,” JackTheRippler wrote. He then concluded that Republicans would have enough support to pass the legislation in the Senate next week, adding, “IT’S HAPPENING!”
His tweet included a video from congressional reporter Steven Dennis discussing negotiations around the legislation. Dennis said lawmakers were attempting to reach a compromise that could be sent to the White House, adding that there were “seven to ten Democrats who sound like they want to ultimately pass a bill.”
JackTheRippler’s interpretation suggests Democratic support could give the bill the votes needed to pass in the Senate.
Senate Vote Is More Complicated Than the Post Suggests
However, the claim should be treated cautiously since no public confirmation that 7 to 10 Democrats have formally committed to voting for the current version of the CLARITY Act.
Seven Democratic senators recently issued a joint statement saying that the current text still falls short on issues involving ethics, consumer protection and illicit finance. Their position leaves their support conditional on further changes rather than confirming they have committed to supporting the bill.
The distinction matters because Republicans hold 53 Senate seats, meaning they would need at least seven Democratic or Democratic-aligned votes if all Republicans support the procedural motion. Possible Republican defections could increase that requirement.
September 15 Vote Is Not Final Passage
Another important detail concerns next week’s Senate vote. The September 15 vote is expected to concern cloture on the motion to proceed. It is not a final vote to pass the CLARITY Act.
Cloture requires 60 votes and would allow the Senate to begin formal consideration of the legislation. Following a successful cloture vote, lawmakers could spend up to 30 hours on post-cloture debate before amendments and a separate final-passage vote.
This means that even if the Senate reaches the 60-vote threshold on September 15, the CLARITY Act would still need to clear additional procedural and legislative steps.
Key Issues Remain Unresolved
Negotiations have continued around several provisions, including ethics requirements, stablecoin rewards, and potential liability for decentralized finance developers. Some senators have also indicated that stronger ethics provisions could be necessary before they support the legislation.
For now, JackTheRippler’s post presents an optimistic interpretation of the negotiations based on Dennis’ comments. Whether seven to 10 Democrats ultimately support the legislation remains unconfirmed, while the September 15 cloture vote represents an important test of the Senate’s willingness to advance the bill.
