CFTC Registers Coinbase Clearing LLC
Coinbase has secured a significant regulatory milestone in its US derivatives business. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved the registration of Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization on September 28, 2026, permitting the company to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps.
The approval gives Coinbase control over another key part of its derivatives business, alongside its existing futures broker, Coinbase Financial Markets Inc., and exchange, Coinbase Derivatives LLC.The approval means Coinbase can now combine its existing futures commission merchant and designated contract market with its own clearinghouse, giving the exchange the ability to list, broker and clear regulated derivatives within the same corporate stack.
"Today's CFTC approval completes Coinbase's end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling us to bring more regulated derivatives products to market with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement," said Coinbase General Counsel Molly Abraham.
USDC Collateral, 24/7 Settlement, and Clear Limits
Coinbase described Coinbase Clearing as its first USDC-native clearinghouse, designed to support USDC as collateral and provide settlement around the clock. The company said the setup is designed to support faster product development and new regulated offerings.
However, the approval comes with defined boundaries. The registration became effective Monday, permitting the clearinghouse to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps, though the registration does not permit the clearinghouse to clear its leveraged products. Margin derivatives and products such as single-stock perpetual futures will continue to be handled through existing third-party clearing partners.
Coinbase joins Kraken in bringing US derivatives infrastructure in-house, after Kraken's parent acquired Bitnomial and its CFTC-regulated exchange, clearinghouse and brokerage in May.
