Gold is holding near a two-month high after briefly climbing above $4,400, putting the $4,500 area back on traders’ radar. The next major test comes Wednesday, when U.S. inflation data could shift Federal Reserve expectations and determine whether XAU/USD extends its recovery or pulls back from stretched short-term levels.
Gold Price Rallies Above $4,400 Ahead of U.S. CPI
Spot gold reached $4,434.84 per ounce on Tuesday, Aug. 11, its highest level since June 5, before giving back part of the advance. Reuters reported spot gold at $4,374.82 at 5:48 a.m. GMT, while U.S. gold futures traded at $4,435. The rally followed weaker U.S. employment data that prompted markets to reduce expectations for another Federal Reserve rate increase.
Attention now turns to the July Consumer Price Index report scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. ET. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that headline CPI fell 0.4% in June but remained 3.5% higher from a year earlier, while core inflation was unchanged for the month and rose 2.6% annually.
A softer-than-expected inflation reading could reinforce expectations that the Fed will avoid further tightening, potentially weighing on the dollar and supporting gold. A hotter CPI print could have the opposite effect by reviving rate-hike expectations.
That policy question remains important after the Fed voted 9-3 to hold its benchmark rate at 3.5%-3.75% on July 29, with three officials preferring a quarter-point increase.
Gold Technical Analysis: $4,485 Is the Next Resistance
The four-hour XAU/USD chart keeps the technical structure bullish. Gold is trading above the moving averages shown on the chart, while the recent advance has pushed price through the $4,370 support area and toward immediate resistance.

The first major upside barrier sits at $4,485, followed by $4,540. A sustained four-hour break above $4,485 would strengthen the case for a move toward $4,500-$4,540.
That $4,500 area also carries broader significance. The World Gold Council’s midyear outlook said a shift toward lower interest-rate expectations, renewed geopolitical stress or stronger dip buying could lift gold toward $4,500 or above during the second half of 2026.
However, momentum is becoming stretched. The chart’s 14-period RSI is around 72, above the commonly watched 70 threshold. That does not confirm a reversal, but it raises the risk of consolidation after the sharp rally. Initial support sits near $4,370, followed by $4,300. Losing $4,370 would weaken the immediate breakout setup.
Weaker Dollar Keeps Gold Bulls in the Game
The daily U.S. Dollar Index chart adds another supportive signal. DXY is near 99.85, below its 50-day exponential moving average around 100.32, while RSI remains below 50. The dollar has stabilized in recent sessions, but it has not yet recovered that moving average.

Geopolitical uncertainty is also keeping safe-haven demand relevant as U.S.-Iran negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz remain stalled. At the same time, rising oil prices could complicate gold’s outlook by adding to inflation concerns.
For now, the gold price prediction remains conditionally bullish above $4,370. A clean break through $4,485 would put $4,500 and $4,540 in focus, while a loss of support could trigger a deeper reset toward $4,300.
