August Burn Tops 2 Billion as New Tax Rate Takes Hold
Terra Luna Classic ($LUNC) incinerated more than 2.04 billion tokens in August, the direct result of a governance-driven overhaul to the chain's on-chain burn mechanism. Proposal #12223 raised the on-chain transaction tax from 0.5% to 1.5%, with the upgrade going live on August 2, 2026. The vote passed with near-unanimous community backing. Under the new structure, the 1.5% tax splits three ways: 1.2% is burned outright, with 0.15% directed to the Community Pool and 0.15% to the Oracle Pool.
The August figure adds to a cumulative historical burn that now exceeds 455 billion LUNC, a milestone that underlines how central the deflationary thesis has become to the project's investment narrative. The impact is tempered by a vast circulating supply of roughly 5.52 trillion tokens, meaning meaningful supply reduction requires sustained high transaction volume over an extended period. The floating supply is estimated to be declining at approximately 0.6% on an annualised basis.
Binance continues to complement on-chain activity with its own voluntary program. Major exchanges, notably Binance, supplement the protocol tax with monthly burn programs using trading fees, and as of August 1, 2026, Binance had cumulatively burned 87.43 billion LUNC.The on-chain tax applies only to transactions that occur directly on the Terra Classic blockchain, meaning trades executed inside a centralised exchange are not subject to the same levy.
Price Up 30% YTD Amid Market Flows and Binance Outflows
$LUNC has gained roughly 30% year-to-date, supported by a combination of broader market tailwinds and notable outflows from Binance. The token was trading at $0.00005612 at the time of writing, up 2.50% in 24 hours and 17.70% over the prior seven days.Large exchange outflows can reduce readily available supply for selling, which analysts note is neutral to slightly bullish for price.
Terra Classic is the chain that survived the 2022 collapse of the original Terra ecosystem and operates with no company or founder in charge, run entirely by a coalition of independent validators and volunteer developers through on-chain governance votes. Whether the tripled burn rate is sufficient to shift the supply-demand equation materially remains the key question for the community. The 1.5% burn tax increase in August 2026 is described as the largest tokenomics change for the project in over a year.
