Nasdaq 23-Hour Trading: Overnight Session Set to Launch December 6

A major shift is coming to U.S. equities, and this Nasdaq 23-hour trading update explains exactly what changes and when. Nasdaq confirmed it will launch a new overnight trading session from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

ET starting December 6, 2026, pending SEC approval, extending the trading day to nearly 23 hours across five days a week.

Overnight Session Set to Launch December 6

The exchange currently operates from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET, covering pre-market, regular, and after-hours trading. Under the new plan, a fourth session running from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

ET gets added on top of that existing schedule, creating near-continuous access five days a week.

According to Nasdaq's official FAQ, the transition to Nasdaq 23-hour trading is targeted for Sunday, December 6, 2026, pending SIP readiness and any required SEC rule changes. Trading will begin at 9 p.m.

ET Sunday and run through 8 p.m. Friday, with a daily one-hour pause from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. built in for processing and trade-date transition.

Core U.S. trading hours from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, marked by the opening and closing crosses, stay exactly as they are and will continue to set official prices across the full trading’s day.

Why Nasdaq Is Making This Move

Nasdaq says the driving force behind this expansion is rising global demand for U.S. equities

By extending access to nearly 23 hours a day, the exchange aims to let issuers attract capital from investors across every time zone, while giving retail and institutional traders broader access to U.S. markets outside standard business hours.

The shift also reflects a broader industry trend. ETF specialist Nate Geraci summed it up directly: "Whether you like it or not, TradFi exchanges are now playing by crypto's rules."

Crypto markets have operated around the clock for years, and Nasdaq 23-hour trading marks one of the clearest signs yet that traditional market finance is adapting to that same standard.

What Traders Should Know Before December 6

A few operational details will matter for anyone planning to trade during the new overnight window:

  1. Any open orders placed between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. ET that remain outstanding at 4 a.m. ET will be automatically cancelled and must be re-entered.

  2. Certain order types, including market, primary peg, and market/limit open or close orders, will not be available during the overnight session.

  3. Members will need to set up new ports for order entry during the 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. window, using OUCH 5, Core FIX, or FIX protocols.

  4. Static price bands, calculated from the listing market's adjusted closing price, will reject orders that move too far outside a 20% range during overnight hours.

  5. Texas and PSX equity exchanges, along with Nasdaq's options exchanges, will not participate and will keep their current schedules.

Expert Take

Industry observers following this shift see it as a long-overdue response to how global trading’s behavior has evolved.

Crypto's always-on markets proved sustained demand exists outside the traditional 9:30-to-4 window, and Nasdaq 23-hour trading is a direct answer to that demand from within regulated equity markets.

What Comes Next

SEC approval remains the key gate before December 6 arrives. Traders should watch for confirmation of SIP readiness, finalized rules on price bands and corporate action handling, and updates on which order types and protocols will be supported once the overnight session goes live.

Quick Glossary

  • SIP: Securities Information Processor, the system that consolidates and distributes market data across exchanges.

  • Static price band: A price range within which orders are accepted; orders outside the band are rejected to prevent extreme price swings.

  • OCP: Official Closing Price, used as a reference point for calculating price bands.
