Australians holding digital assets can now borrow cash without dumping their tokens.

Nexo Australia has stepped into regulated consumer credit, launching flexible crypto-backed credit lines across the country. The rollout marks a notable pivot for the firm, pushing past basic token trading and asset management right into local borrowing territory.

How the Lending Setup Works

You put up digital coins as collateral. You pull out cash or stablecoins.

Under the hood, these personal loans fall under the National Consumer Credit Protection Act. Nexo Individual Loans Pty Ltd provides the credit, while Avgi Pty Ltd services the accounts under Australian Credit Licence 567308. Borrowers receive dedicated local bank account details for smooth Australian dollar transfers, and funds generally land in under 24 hours.

Here is what the credit terms look like on paper:

  • Flexible Timelines: No fixed loan terms or upfront setup charges.
  • Collateral Swaps: Users can swap out one backing token for another without shutting down their open line.
  • Tiered Interest Rates: Annual rates sit anywhere between 0.9% and 21.9%, depending entirely on the customer’s loyalty status and the specific credit version chosen.

Trading Liquidity for Market Risk

Selling crypto to cover short-term expenses can trigger steep tax bills or lock in painful market losses. Borrowing against a portfolio lets investors keep their exposure intact.

Yet, leverage always cuts both ways.

Digital assets swing wildly in price. When underlying collateral drops too fast, borrowers face rapid margin calls and forced liquidations, a reality Nexo explicitly flags in its product paperwork. Alongside the basic credit lines, Nexo is also rolling out its "Booster" tool (allowing up to three-times leverage) and bringing back "Nexo Growth," which offers yield rates up to 10% annually on select holdings.

Tying Digital Coins to Local Financial Regulators

Few crypto outfits dare to step squarely into Australia’s strict credit regime.

Nexo, however, is building out a formal footprint. The company is registered with AUSTRAC as a digital currency exchange provider and belongs to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA). Right now, it is operating under ASIC's mid-2026 no-action stance while regulators review its formal Australian Financial Services Licence application.

"We built these offerings around local rules and consumer protection standards from day one," noted Peter Stanhope, General Manager at Nexo Australia.

The market timing makes sense. Nearly a third of the Australian public now owns crypto, while local demand for personal fixed-term loans cleared nearly A$10 billion in early 2026 alone.

Looking Ahead

Nexo's Australian platform now covers trading, credit lines, loyalty perks, and yield programs. The immediate hurdle ahead is straightforward: securing that full ASIC licence to cement its status as a fixture of Australia’s regulated digital economy.
