US stock futures advanced on Monday, October 26, led by gains in semiconductor shares as Nvidia, AMD, and Intel each climbed more than 1% in early trading. Despite the bounce, concerns lingered about mounting debt in the artificial intelligence infrastructure sector, weighing on parts of the technology market.

Semiconductor Rally Follows Heavy Selling

At 9:05 a.m. ET, futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 0.4%, while S&P 500 futures were up 0.34% and Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.6%. The moves came after last week’s decline, when the Dow lost approximately 653 points, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite fell 0.52% and 0.21%, respectively.

Nvidia rebounded sharply, trading near $213.40 shortly after the opening bell, up 1.2% from Friday’s $210.96 close. The turnaround followed a period in which semiconductor shares collectively lost around $2 trillion in market capitalization across eight trading sessions, as investors reassessed the long-term returns from rapid investments in AI technology.

The market recovery came as investors balanced renewed optimism for semiconductor demand with ongoing concern over the cost of financing the massive infrastructure required for AI applications. The debate has become more pressing as companies in the AI sector, particularly those relying on borrowed funds, faced fresh scrutiny.

AI Infrastructure Providers Under Pressure

Semiconductor producer Nvidia, known for its market-leading graphics processors, earns revenue from chip sales. In contrast, AI infrastructure operators such as CoreWeave and Nebius, which provide the computing facilities necessary for AI workloads, must finance expensive facilities and technology upfront and hope to recoup costs through future customer contracts.

In premarket trading, Nvidia-backed CoreWeave dropped about 3%, while Nebius and other infrastructure firms saw continued selling pressure. Both CoreWeave and Nebius have recorded market value declines of more than 30% this month.

CoreWeave’s growing borrowing costs have intensified questions about whether these companies’ projected future revenues will support their debt. This heightened financial vulnerability stands in clear contrast to chip providers, which typically generate steady revenue through hardware sales.

The gap between semiconductor makers and infrastructure specialists underscores the different risk profiles of these segments within the broader AI ecosystem.

Mini dictionary: CoreWeave is a cloud infrastructure company that specializes in providing on-demand graphics processing capability for AI and high-performance computing applications. Nebius is an AI infrastructure provider that offers scalable computing resources for businesses building advanced machine learning models.

Nvidia earns income from processor sales, while infrastructure providers like CoreWeave and Nebius face substantial upfront investments with debt exposure, making the market pay closer attention to their financial sustainability.

Investors Await Fed Decision and Tech Earnings

Investors’ focus is turning to the Federal Reserve, which will begin its policy meeting on October 27 and announce its decision on Wednesday. Most market participants expect the central bank to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at a target range of 3.75% to 4.00% amid persistent inflation and elevated energy prices.

Oil prices eased on Monday, with Brent crude sliding toward $110 per barrel, after a recent rally that contributed to rising Treasury yields and pressure on stock valuations.

Major technology companies are also set to report this week. Alphabet and Microsoft will announce quarterly results on Wednesday, followed by Amazon on Thursday. Their earnings are expected to provide further insight into whether significant investments in AI have begun to drive consistent growth in revenue and profits.

Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon’s earnings will offer crucial updates on the profitability of the ongoing AI spending boom amid market scrutiny of costly technology investments.
