Osmosis has burned 55.5 million $OSMO from its community pool after @osmosis governance passed Proposal 1057 with 91.1% of votes in favour. The project puts the burn at about 7% of OSMO supply, and it takes the total amount of OSMO burned past 100 million tokens.
How the Burn Was Carried Out
The transfer executed automatically on-chain once voting closed. According to an Osmosis Labs code repository entry, Proposal 1057 sent 55,500,000 OSMO from the community pool to the null address at block height 74,089,033, with a block time of 14:26 UTC on November 4, 2026. The entry says the burn ran in the governance module's end-of-block process, which means it was not a standard transaction. Tokens sent to a null address cannot be spent.
The same repository entry lists the burn as a one-off event so that it stays out of the dashboard's burn rate and net inflation calculations. The cumulative burn figure now stands at 100,283,232 OSMO, above the 100 million mark the proposal set out to reach.
The burn covered nearly half of the pool's OSMO holdings. The Defiant reported that the pool retains about 63.78 million OSMO, and that new token issuance no longer replenishes its reserves. The pool's OSMO balance will therefore no longer grow through issuance.
Phemex noted that the burn permanently removes the tokens from future governance spending allocations, and that they were already outside circulation before the burn. For holders, the change removes a potential source of future token distributions rather than taking tokens out of active circulation.
Before the vote, proposal author Johnny Wyles was asked whether validators can still be paid. KuCoin News reported that he pointed to a reserve of non-OSMO assets in the pool and to more revenue now flowing to stakers.
The proposal was first reported on October 30, 2026, when TradingView News, citing CoinMarketCal, said the burn would cover nearly half of the pool's holdings and cut supply by about 7%.
