Pi Network (@PiCoreTeam) Ventures-backed OpenMind (@openmind_agi) has opened the waitlist for Instabody, a platform that allows users to remotely control a real humanoid robot. According to the company, participants can see the world through the robot's eyes and directly control its movements in real time. OpenMind believes putting the controls in the hands of ordinary people will help shape how robots develop and evolve over time.
The concept marks an unusual approach in the robotics industry, moving beyond research labs and industrial pilots to invite public participation at an early stage. Rather than positioning the robot as a product to be sold, OpenMind is framing direct human interaction as a feedback mechanism for guiding the technology's direction.
Building the Software Layer for Robotics
Instabody is the latest move from a company that has been quietly building core infrastructure for the broader robotics market. OpenMind's platform is built on OM1, its modular operating system for social and autonomous robots. OM1 allows models, behaviors, and task logic to be defined through lightweight configuration files, enabling developers to package complex capabilities into portable applications that can be distributed and updated at scale across different hardware.
Earlier this year, OpenMind launched an app store for robots, a platform designed to serve as the software distribution layer for quadruped and humanoid robots already operating in real-world environments. The store launched with a group of established robotics manufacturers as partners, including Ubtech, Agibot, Deep Robotics, Fourier, Booster, Dobot, LimX, and Magic Lab.
The app store is built on OM1, OpenMind's modular operating system, which allows developers to create apps that package specific skills for distribution across multiple robot platforms. OpenMind founder and CEO Jan Liphardt drew a comparison to smartphones: "Computers and phones come with an operating system to provide the basics, but the real magic is the ability for everyone to personalize their phones and computers through apps and programs. That's how generic hardware comes to life and becomes your phone and your laptop."
With Instabody, OpenMind is now extending that philosophy directly to end users, giving the public a hands-on role in the evolution of humanoid robotics rather than leaving development entirely to engineers and manufacturers.
