Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has described 2026 as an exceptional period for the company, pointing to robust growth in transaction volumes and expanding opportunities for XRP in global finance. Ripple, a San Francisco-based blockchain payments technology firm, is known for leveraging the XRP token to deliver cross-border payment solutions for institutional clients.

Ripple’s evolving business model and XRP’s strategic role

In a recent interview with BankXRP during the Ripple Swell conference, Garlinghouse discussed the company’s strategic direction and the evolving role of XRP within its products. He noted that Ripple began its journey by tackling payments challenges through blockchain, but has since expanded to offer corporate treasury services and prime brokerage solutions.

Garlinghouse emphasized that XRP remains at the core of Ripple’s approach, but highlighted that the company takes a pragmatic stance. Ripple prioritizes XRP integration where it brings real value, although the company acknowledges that not all transactions fit this model. In some cases, traditional fiat currencies or stablecoins such as RLUSD may be more suitable, reflecting flexibility in serving client needs.

He added that Ripple does not aim for XRP to power every transaction, preferring to capture even a modest share of customer volumes than to be excluded altogether. Garlinghouse underlined that while discussions often center on XRP’s market share, the true potential lies in the size of the markets Ripple can access.

Ripple’s CEO argued that integrating XRP for even a small fraction of a customer’s transactions is a strong outcome, noting that the industry’s focus should shift to the overall market growth Ripple can unlock with its technology.

He also pointed out that customer preferences and transaction requirements can dictate the choice of asset, ensuring that Ripple solutions remain versatile in a rapidly shifting payments landscape.

Mini dictionary: RLUSD – RLUSD is a stablecoin reportedly designed to maintain a fixed value by being pegged to a reference asset, such as the US dollar. Stablecoins like RLUSD are used in both cross-border transfers and as a way to minimize volatility in digital asset transactions.

Record growth in transaction value throughout 2026

Garlinghouse highlighted that Ripple posted impressive transaction growth during 2026. He cited an increase in company revenue from $300 million to $900 million and stated that Ripple processed around $16 trillion in transaction value over the course of the previous year.

He compared Ripple’s processed volume with global payments giant Visa, clarifying, however, that about 99.9% of this transaction activity still occurred through traditional financial rails. Garlinghouse signaled optimism about increasing blockchain’s share in that volume and set a possible short-term target for Ripple to move between 1% and 3% of transactions through alternative rails in the coming year.

Garlinghouse believes that shifting even a small percentage of global transaction flows onto blockchain rails would mark a significant milestone for Ripple and XRP adoption.

Broader outlook on XRP and digital asset adoption

Looking ahead, Garlinghouse projected that XRP could become an institutional standard within five years, as blockchain-based infrastructure earns wider adoption across financial services. David Schwartz, Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer, predicted that blockchain would be integrated into mainstream finance even sooner, estimating a timespan of three years.

Schwartz stressed the critical role of real-world asset tokenization in driving retail participation. He asserted that expanding usage beyond institutional corridors is essential for accelerating industry growth and supporting mass-market adoption of digital assets.

Both senior executives agreed that the coming years will be characterized by greater institutional utility, more transaction activity, and a central ongoing role for XRP within Ripple’s expanding product suite.
