Ripple is donating $300,000 to World Central Kitchen and Mercy Corps to support emergency relief after catastrophic flooding swept through Nepal and Tibet, killing hundreds and leaving thousands missing.
The August 26 disaster began after a Himalayan glacier collapse sent ice, rock, mud and water into river valleys near the Nepal-China border. The combined toll had reached 750 deaths and 3,044 missing by Sunday, with 734 confirmed deaths in Nepal and another 16 in Tibet as rescue teams continued searching isolated communities and hydropower tunnels.
Ripple said the funding will support emergency meal distribution through World Central Kitchen alongside water and sanitation work carried out by Mercy Corps. The company did not disclose how the $300,000 would be divided between the two organizations.
World Central Kitchen teams were already working with restaurant partners in Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts after the floods destroyed settlements and cut road access. Its relief personnel were sent toward the affected area to expand food distribution as local partners continued serving meals.
Mercy Corps is coordinating with local authorities and humanitarian groups around urgent needs in the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors. The organization has operated in Nepal since 2005, including disaster response and preparedness programs covering earthquakes, floods and landslides.
The flood moved rapidly downstream through Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, destroying homes, bridges, roads, power infrastructure and communications links. More than 90,000 people are estimated to have been affected across Nepal and Tibet, while fresh rainfall has complicated rescue operations and increased fears of additional flooding.
UNICEF has identified more than 17,000 children in Nepal as needing humanitarian assistance and is deploying hygiene supplies, medical tents, newborn kits and nutrition support to affected communities.
Ripple has previously used both direct grants and digital-asset infrastructure in philanthropic programs. The company made a $25 million education pledge in 2025, largely through its RLUSD stablecoin, supporting DonorsChoose and Teach For America.
The Nepal contribution also follows other recent humanitarian funding from the crypto sector, including a $250,000 Ebola response grant from Binance supporting medical and relief work in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
Ripple already had established relationships with both recipients before the Himalayan disaster. World Central Kitchen and Mercy Corps were among the nonprofits working with Ripple Payments and RLUSD on humanitarian payment initiatives, while Mercy Corps has separately tested blockchain-linked financial tools for vulnerable communities.
