  • Sui has announced that its mainnet was hit by another outage today, with network activity paused as the team investigates the incident.
  • The network faced an outage yesterday that lasted nearly six hours, blamed on a bug in the gas charging logic that was introduced by a recent upgrade.

Sui has been hit by a network outage for the second time in two days, triggering questions about its stability and triggering millions of dollars in losses for users of Sui-based protocols.

Sui announced the outage today at 2.19 PM CET, and at press time, three hours later, it had yet to be fixed. It noted that the mainnet was experiencing a network stall and that network activity would be paused as the Core Team investigated the incident.

Most concerning is that today’s outage comes hours after another similar incident. The team announced yesterday that it was experiencing a network stall and was investigating it, advising users to be aware that transactions would be paused.

The outage lasted 5 hours and 55 minutes before the team announced the fix.

According to the team, the outage was due to “a crash bug in the gas charging logic introduced by the 1.72 release. A full incident review will be shared in the coming days.”

The outage affected thousands of users, with many popular protocols halting activities, including NAVI, Panzerdogs and Cetus. USDC activity on the network was also halted. This was barely days after the network had announced gasless stablecoin transactions as it sought to target agentic payments, which are dominated by microtransactions.

Just two days earlier, founder Adeniyi Abiodun had announced that the network was working on making all stablecoin transactions private by default, as we reported.

In response to the first outage, Abiodun admitted that “outages suck,” but applauded the engineering team for its efforts in restoring the network. “Iterating fast comes with pain,” he added. He has yet to comment on the latest outage.

Sui’s Outages Lead to Millions in Losses

v1.72, which Sui blamed for the outage, is the latest protocol upgrade, released on May 20. One of its biggest changes was gasless stablecoin transactions, with other changes including a new address balance feature and a fix to the gas meter.

Outages are not new to Sui. In January this year, the network went offline for 5 hours and 52 minutes. The team blamed it on a divergence in consensus among the validators, which temporarily froze over $1 billion in assets on the network. The specific reason behind this divergence was not revealed, but the team released new automated validation tools shortly after.

The outage yesterday led to a drop in DEX volume from $76.4 million to $48.4 million, data from DeFiLlama shows. Protocol revenue was down 39.8% to $22,502.

The crypto community has called out Sui for the repeated outages, which often lead to millions of dollars in losses. Traders whose positions are frozen on Sui-based protocols are unable to exit, triggering liquidations.

The SUI token has survived the outage, losing only 2% in the past 24 hours despite the chaos. It trades at $0.8968 at press time.
