The CLARITY Act, which aims to create a regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency market in the US, faces a critical date in the Senate proceedings: September 15th. According to the current schedule, the cloture vote, which would pave the way for the bill, is scheduled for the afternoon of September 15th. For the bill to continue its consideration in the Senate, it needs the support of at least 60 senators.
However, the current political landscape suggests that the bill is not yet guaranteed to receive the necessary support. It has been reported that, in addition to Democratic senators, some Republican figures have also indicated they will not vote for the bill in its current form.
Disagreements over the Clarity Act are said to fall under three main headings. The first concerns ethical guidelines and potential conflicts of interest, while the second major area of contention is stablecoin rewards. The third heading includes provisions to combat illicit finance, legal protections for software developers, regulations regarding conflicts of interest and vertical integration, and demands for the appointment of Democratic members to the CFTC and SEC commissioners.
If the vote scheduled for September 15th surpasses the 60-vote threshold, the CLARITY Act could proceed with its legislative process in the Senate. Otherwise, the long-awaited comprehensive market structure regulation for the crypto market could face another delay.
