U.S. Bank has completed a live cross-border payment using USBDC, its proprietary dollar-backed stablecoin, on the public Stellar blockchain ($XLM). According to the bank's filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the pilot moved funds between U.S. Bank entities in North America and Europe and demonstrated the potential for 24/7 transactions.

The bank, the fifth-largest commercial lender in the United States, said the deployment ran on @StellarOrg while staying connected to its existing finance, risk, compliance and operations systems. LeapRate reported that U.S. Bank described USBDC as one of the first bank-issued stablecoins deployed on a public blockchain.

An internal treasury transfer, not a client payment

The transaction was an intra-group movement of funds. Ledger Insights noted that it was not a client payment, which points to corporate treasury and the bank's own liquidity rather than consumer use.

That limits what the result shows. CryptoSlate said both ends of the payment stayed inside U.S. Bank's corporate structure, so the test did not involve settlement with an outside bank, merchant or retail customer.

The bank has not disclosed the amount moved or a commercial rollout date, according to crypto.news. It also did not announce public access to USBDC.

What the pilot tested

Beyond the transfer itself, the exercise evaluated several issuer functions. The bank's filing says the pilot validated its internally developed Digital Asset Platform and assessed minting, payment redemption, freezing and clawbacks.

Stellar's own write-up says the effort follows an announcement last November that U.S. Bank was testing custom stablecoin issuance on the network. At that stage, Ledger Insights reported, the bank was building issuance capability rather than running live transactions.

U.S. Bank CEO Gunjan Kedia said the pilot shows the bank can speed up global cash management and money movement for clients within a regulated banking framework, per LeapRate. The bank is exploring liquidity management, collateral mobility and cross-border treasury uses as next steps, crypto.news reported.

For now, the pilot is a proof of concept for how a regulated U.S. bank can use a public network while keeping issuer controls in place, rather than a commercial stablecoin product.
