Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano, has sparked fresh debate in the crypto community with surprisingly positive remarks about the XRP ecosystem. Once known for his critical stance, Hoskinson now highlights XRP’s potential in decentralized finance (DeFi), drawing direct comparisons with Ethereum and leading stablecoin issuers such as Tether and Circle.

Cardano and XRP: A history of rivalry

Longstanding divisions have separated supporters of Cardano and XRP, especially over decentralization, governance models, and ecosystem design. Disagreements regarding the foundational principles of blockchain technology have fueled tension between the communities. This time, however, Hoskinson has taken a more analytical and less combative tone in his assessment.

DeFi ambitions: XRP’s rapid growth prospects

Hoskinson predicts that XRP-based decentralized finance solutions could become one of crypto’s fastest-growing segments by 2027. While Ethereum currently dominates the DeFi space, he points to its struggles with scaling and liquidity fragmentation. Heavy usage in so-called Layer 2 networks complicates Ethereum’s usability. In contrast, despite its smaller initial ecosystem, Hoskinson believes XRP’s streamlined and purpose-driven design gives it an edge for rapid expansion.

According to Hoskinson, XRP-powered DeFi, thanks to its advanced design, could progress faster than Ethereum before 2027. Persistent issues around liquidity and scaling in today’s major platforms, he argues, open the door for the next generation of networks.

Glossary: Layer 2 networks are additional solutions built on top of main blockchains to boost transaction capacity. By doing so, they help lower fees and reduce congestion on the main network.

XRP as the “Web2.5” bridge

Hoskinson has described XRP as a “Web2.5” bridge that links traditional finance with fully decentralized applications. Unlike Ethereum’s general-purpose smart contract infrastructure, XRP’s architecture is fine-tuned for payments, transfers, and especially connections at the institutional level. This allows XRP to maximize speed and efficiency in value transfers while intentionally limiting its programmability to narrower use cases.

Comparing it to stablecoins like USDT and USDC, Hoskinson emphasizes that XRP was designed to be independent of central issuers and interoperable across multiple networks. While stablecoins offer strong liquidity, their connection to traditional banking is ongoing. XRP, instead, aims for direct value transfer without needing fiat currency links.

Hoskinson’s shifting stance on XRP

Previously, Hoskinson had criticized XRP for its token distribution and Ripple’s influence over its supply. His recent statements, however, reflect a more balanced view. He now describes XRP as a “sleeping giant” that could play a key role in future financial systems due to its strong branding and untapped potential. This shift also points to an increasing recognition of the need for coexistence and cooperation within the blockchain world.

In his latest comments, Hoskinson stated that XRP is poised to play a more influential role in the next era of crypto adoption, urging blockchain communities to unite for common goals.
