In the wake of significant volatility in the XRP market, exchanges are witnessing a sharp uptick in token supply, coupled with a notable decline in derivatives positions. According to data from CryptoQuant, the total balance of XRP on major cryptocurrency exchanges escalated to 11.81 billion tokens as of October 17, a level nearing its highest point within the past year.

XRP Supply on Exchanges Raises Concerns

The increased volume of XRP held on exchanges has sparked concerns over potential selling pressure in the market. Despite not surpassing the peak levels for the year, the current reserves appear unusually high. This development coincides with a period where the price of XRP struggles to recover from recent declines.

CryptoQuant, a prominent platform focused on blockchain and exchange data analytics, indicates that a significant portion of holders continue to store their XRP on exchanges. This trend underlines the risk of sustained high supply levels in the short term.

XRP reserves reaching 11.81 billion tokens signify that sell-ready supply remains near the peak levels observed over the past year.

Leveraged Positions on Binance Dwindle

Simultaneously, data reveals a downturn in derivatives activity on Binance amid the rising XRP supply. As of October 17, the open interest in XRP on Binance—the world’s largest crypto exchange by trading volume—stood at $453 million. This figure represents a 15.8% reduction from $538.1 million on October 4.

Open interest reflects the total size of open positions in futures and similar derivative products that have yet to be settled. The decline suggests that traders are closing or liquidating their positions. Specifically for XRP, this downward trend indicates waning interest in leveraged trading.

The reduction of XRP open interest from $538.1 million on October 4 to $453 million on October 17 highlights a decrease in derivative positions.

Cautious Market Sentiment Prevails

The concurrence of elevated exchange reserves and declining open interest points to a more defensive investor stance. Observers note the increase in XRP holdings on exchanges while leveraged positions are being scaled back. This dual scenario suggests a fragile market sentiment in the short term.

In the context of a broader downward trend in the cryptocurrency market, these findings indicate that the pressure on XRP is yet to fully dissipate. Particularly, the substantial token reserves held on exchanges add uncertainty to the speed of any potential price recovery.
