Argentina has reached a significant milestone in cryptocurrency adoption, with 94% of peso-denominated crypto trading volume now flowing into dollar-pegged stablecoins. This figure represents the highest stablecoin share among all major fiat currencies tracked by data provider Artemis, according to research by a16z crypto.
Stablecoins dominate Argentina’s crypto trading
A report released by a16z crypto in late August 2026 highlights Argentina’s unique position in Latin America’s digital asset landscape. Around 20% of Argentines have reportedly adopted cryptocurrency, positioning the country among the region’s leaders in crypto usage rates.
App analytics indicate a 93% year-over-year increase in downloads for Argentina’s 15 largest cryptocurrency applications in 2024. This upward trend signals a shift from using cryptocurrencies merely as a hedge against inflation to more routine stablecoin transactions.
Stablecoin usage in Argentina has evolved from a temporary inflation shelter into a regular financial habit, as downloads for major crypto wallets continue to rise even after inflation rates begin to moderate.
Longstanding distrust of the peso drives digital dollar demand
Argentina’s preference for holding value in dollars rather than the national peso dates back several decades. The country experienced a severe banking crisis in 2001 and 2002, when authorities froze bank deposits and forced the conversion of dollar accounts into pesos by decree. The collapse of the peso’s dollar peg during this period reduced its value to a quarter of its previous level.
As a result, many Argentines lost trust in both domestic banks and the peso, often choosing to store their savings in US dollars outside of the formal financial system. This ingrained behavior set the stage for the rapid adoption of digital dollar alternatives when stablecoins emerged.
The introduction of new currency controls in 2019 further fueled this trend. The government set a limit of $200 per month on individual dollar purchases, while stricter eligibility requirements prevented a segment of the population from accessing foreign currency altogether. Stablecoins, such as USDC, provided an accessible option for circumventing these official restrictions.
By 2023, capital controls had widened the gap between Argentina’s official and parallel exchange rates to over 100%. As stablecoins traded around the clock and independently from the regulated market, their appeal for Argentines grew further.
For many Argentines, “buying crypto means buying dollars,” making stablecoins a preferred store of value in times of currency instability.
Habitual stablecoin use persists amid easing inflation
The a16z crypto report also highlights the role of stablecoins in the earnings of local contractors during periods of high inflation. Inflation reached an annual rate of 289% in April 2024, spurring a rise in contractor payments sent in USDC, according to payroll data from Deel.
Index data from Deel shows a correlation between local inflation and the proportion of Argentine contractors receiving compensation in USDC. By July 2026, both Argentina’s inflation rate and the share of contractor pay in stablecoins had fallen to about one-fifth of their earlier levels.
Argentina relaxed most controls on dollar purchases in April 2025, resulting in a convergence of the official and parallel market exchange rates. As of August 28, 2026, the cost of acquiring a digital dollar was only about 4% higher than buying dollars at the official rate.

Despite the reduction in inflation and relaxed currency controls, stablecoin adoption has remained strong. Downloads of Lemon, one of Argentina’s largest crypto wallets, have continued to increase each quarter, even as monthly inflation dropped significantly. Analysts suggest that stablecoins have shifted from an emergency asset to an everyday financial tool.
