Bitcoin News: Could MARA and Hut 8 Transfers Weigh on BTC Price?

Key Insights:

  • Bitcoin news: MARA transferred 1,000 BTC, worth $82.8 million, to Binance and Gate over five days, according to Lookonchain.
  • Hut 8 moved 1,589 BTC, worth $130 million, to exchanges over two days, raising questions about potential selling.
  • The combined $212.8 million in transfers could add selling pressure on Bitcoin, but exchange deposits alone do not confirm completed sales.

Blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain reported on October 19 that two major publicly traded Bitcoin miners have transferred a combined 2,589 BTC to cryptocurrency exchanges. As per the latest Bitcoin news, those digital assets are worth approximately $212.8 million.

Marathon Digital Holdings (NASDAQ: MARA) moved 1,000 BTC, valued at about $82.8 million, to Binance and Gate.io over five days. Hut 8 Mining Corp. transferred another 1,589 BTC, worth roughly $130 million, to multiple exchanges within 48 hours.

With Bitcoin trading near $82,000, any confirmed sales could increase available supply and weigh on BTC price.

Exchange Deposits vs. Confirmed Sales

Despite the size of the transfers, neither company has confirmed selling any Bitcoin. Analysts caution that moving coins to exchanges is a *signal*, not proof of a sale. As BSCN noted, “deposits alone do not confirm a Bitcoin sale”.

Crypto research from the Coin Republic similarly observes that transfers “could reflect custody movements rather than confirmed selling.”

For now, the coins remain in exchange deposit addresses; only if they hit the order books would they be registered as sales. As a reporting company, Hut 8 would likely need to disclose any material sale of treasury assets.

According to on‑chain data, the 1,589 BTC from Hut 8 represent about 15% of its 10,278‑coin treasury.

Hut 8’s own filings had emphasized a “self-mining and HODL strategy” with no large disposals, so this move stands out. Meanwhile, Marathon’s 1,000 BTC is a much smaller share of its holdings but still a notable sum. MARA held roughly 27,000 BTC at mid-2026!

Bitcoin Miner Balance Sheets and Recent Sales

Both companies have a history of monetizing BTC crypto to fund operations. Marathon’s SEC filings show aggressive Bitcoin sales earlier in 2026. It sold 15,133 BTC, about $1.1 billion, between March 4 and March 25, 2026, to buy back debt.

According to Bitcoin news reports, MARA sold 23,093 BTC, worth about $1.6 billion, in H1 2026. It used most of the proceeds to repurchase convertible notes.

The miner also invested in new ventures – for example, a $1.5 billion acquisition of a power plant and land for AI/HPC development.

This explains why it might periodically tap its Bitcoin reserves. MARA has previously sold some of its Bitcoin holdings to secure operating funds and manage debt as it moves into AI and high-performance computing.

Hut 8 has likewise referenced converting some BTC to support growth, though it has been more focused on mining. Its treasury of 10,278 BTC ($846M) would see its market value change significantly if large amounts were sold.

Bitcoin News & BTC Price Analysis in Focus

The Bitcoin price backdrop is important for interpreting these moves. At the time of writing, Bitcoin traded near $82,000.

Technical analysts have noted resistance around $83,300 and again near $87,000, levels that must be overcome to sustain any rally.

On the flip side, crypto data aggregator CryptoQuant warns in Bitcoin news that exchange bitcoin reserves have inched up from about 2.67 million to 2.68 million in October.

In other words, selling pressure has not completely abated. Also, a 30-day “spot demand” metric briefly turned negative, reflecting cooling in direct BTC purchases. In practice, if the $212 million of coins held by MARA and Hut 8 reach the market as sell orders, they could add to supply at a delicate time.

That said, on‑chain analysts point out that institutional buyers have been stepping in at current prices, partially offsetting miner outflows. Bitcoin’s dominance has even risen amid this period of Bitcoin news, suggesting money is still flowing into Bitcoin relative to smaller coins.
