Bithumb confirmed a security breach involving employee personal information as South Korean regulators examined intrusions across several financial firms. The exchange detected unauthorized access to its internal mobile work system on October 27, 2026.
The exchange disclosed the incident on October 28 while investigating whether attackers also accessed information belonging to customers.
The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) is assessing breaches involving the exchange, Mirae Asset Global Investments, and Daishin Securities. It has also dispatched an inspection team to Daishin Securities to examine the security incident.
The disclosures followed a separate breach at Mirae Asset Life Insurance on October 26. The latest disclosures extended the reported breaches to almost every major financial sector, with credit card companies the exception.
Bithumb Reports Unauthorized Mobile System Access
According to Yonhap and local reports, an unauthorized external party entered the exchange’s internal mobile groupware system. Employees use the system to communicate and carry out administrative work within the company.

The company notified the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) after discovering the unauthorized access. The exchange also reported the incident to South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission.
Bithumb notified affected employees about the incident and said its initial findings primarily involved records concerning company staff.
However, investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the compromised system contained information belonging to exchange members. The exchange is examining what customer information, if any, attackers could have accessed through the internal system.
In addition, the company has not publicly disclosed how many people the breach affected or who the attackers are. It has also not provided a detailed breakdown of the categories of personal information exposed during the intrusion.
The crypto hack investigation covers the cause of the intrusion and the extent of data exposure. The exchange said it would provide further details as its investigation progressed.
In addition, Bithumb reported that its internal administrative infrastructure operates separately from its cryptocurrency trading platform. It said the intrusion did not provide direct access to customer digital assets. No cryptocurrency theft has been confirmed in connection with the incident.
Mirae Asset Examines Administrative Data
Separately, Mirae Asset Global Investments is investigating the cause and scope of a breach involving some administrative systems.
The company said initial findings showed no exposure of uniquely identifying information, sensitive information, or personal credit information. It added that the affected systems did not serve retail customers and therefore did not involve investor information.
Bithumb Hack Prompts FSS Governor to Demand Stronger Board Oversight
FSS Governor Lee Chan-jin discussed the incidents at an October 28 meeting with chairpersons from eight banking holding companies. He said he understood that major financial investment companies had experienced hacking incidents the previous day. Lee again urged financial institutions to strengthen their information technology security capabilities.
He said attackers use artificial intelligence to identify security vulnerabilities more easily. He added that simultaneous attacks were becoming routine as hackers increasingly used AI tools. His comments accompanied the regulator’s assessment of the newly reported intrusions across cryptocurrency trading and financial investment firms.
Lee asked boards to lead efforts to improve IT security, citing the need to protect customer assets and information. He also linked stronger security capabilities to maintaining trust in financial institutions. The governor presented IT security as a core responsibility for boards overseeing financial services.
