On February 2, 2026, Cathie Wood said something that turned heads across financial media. The ARK Invest CEO said she would "make a shift from gold into Bitcoin," pointing to a chart showing gold divided by the M2 money supply had hit a record high.

Her conclusion was direct. "Gold is probably riding for a fall," she said, citing the last two times gold reached similar levels, the inflation of the 1970s and the Great Depression.

She recommended selling gold and buying Bitcoin instead. Five months and 28 days later, the market has delivered its verdict.

What happened to both assets

When Wood made her call, Bitcoin was trading at approximately $73,000. Gold was at approximately $2,800 per ounce.

Today, Bitcoin is trading near $64,000, down roughly 12 percent from her call date. Gold is trading near $3,300 per ounce, up approximately 18 percent over the same period.

Gold did not ride for a fall. It hit a record high above $3,500 in April 2026 before pulling back to current levels.

Bitcoin, meanwhile, has spent much of 2026 in a bear market, closing three consecutive red quarters for the first time in its history.

Anyone who followed Wood's advice on February 2, selling gold to buy Bitcoin, is sitting on a combined swing of 30 percentage points in the wrong direction.

They gave up 18 percent in gold gains and absorbed a 12 percent Bitcoin loss simultaneously.

Where her long-term case still stands

The short-term scorecard favours gold. But Wood's argument was never a short-term trade.

She framed the call as part of ARK's broader "great acceleration" thesis, expecting AI-driven capital expenditure to spill into blockchain and energy storage through converging S-curves.

Her Bitcoin price target of $1.5 million by 2030 remains unchanged. Her bull case sits at $3.8 million.

At Bitcoin's current price of $64,000, reaching $1.5 million would require a 23-fold increase in under four years. The six-month scorecard says she was wrong. The 2030 verdict is still four years away.

Gold won the first half. Whether Bitcoin wins the match is the question Wood has been asking investors to sit with since February.
