As AI agents become capable of completing tasks independently, the ability to make payments is emerging as a key piece of the puzzle—and Coinbase wants to be at the center of it.
This week, Coinbase Business introduced new capabilities that allow merchants to accept payments directly from AI agents. Built on Coinbase Payments and the x402 open internet payments standard, the new infrastructure is designed to let businesses receive payments from autonomous software just as easily as they do from human customers. The launch reflects Coinbase's growing confidence that AI-powered commerce could become one of crypto's most significant real-world use cases. Siddharth Coelho-Prabhu, head of Coinbase Business, described agentic payments as one of the company's "most high-conviction bets," saying the company began investing in the space years before the recent surge in AI adoption.
AI Agents Are Becoming Economic Participants
Unlike traditional AI assistants that primarily generate content or answer questions, AI agents are built to perform tasks with minimal human intervention. They can compare prices, purchase software subscriptions, pay for cloud computing resources, register domain names, or access APIs automatically as part of larger workflows. As these capabilities improve, payments become a necessary part of the equation. Existing payment systems were designed for people, often requiring manual authentication, card verification, or banking infrastructure that autonomous software cannot easily navigate.
Blockchain-based payments offer a more flexible alternative. Stablecoins such as USDC can move across networks around the clock, while programmable wallets enable AI agents to follow predefined spending rules without constant oversight.
Coinbase's x402 protocol aims to simplify that process by creating an open payment standard that allows machines to communicate payment requests and complete transactions more efficiently.
Building for the Agent Economy
Alongside the new payment capabilities, Coinbase also introduced Coinbase for Agents, giving developers tools to integrate AI applications with crypto wallets and blockchain payments. The company also released a software development kit designed to make x402 easier to implement across websites and applications.
Together, these products create a workflow in which AI agents can discover services, create wallets, receive funding, complete purchases, and settle payments using USDC on Base or other supported blockchain networks.
Rather than treating AI as a separate business line, Coinbase is positioning crypto as the financial infrastructure that could support an emerging agent economy.
Early Adoption Is Already Underway
While agentic commerce is still in its early stages, Coinbase says real-world adoption has already begun.
According to the company, AI agents are already making purchases for businesses in the digital infrastructure sector, including cloud services, developer tools, domain registrations, and OpenRouter credits. These use cases may appear niche today, but they demonstrate how autonomous software is beginning to participate in commercial activity. Coinbase also shared another indicator of growing interest. In June, around 53% of traffic to Base's developer documentation reportedly came from AI agents rather than human visitors, highlighting increasing developer activity around autonomous applications. Since launching in June 2025, Coinbase Business has onboarded roughly 5,000 customers and processed approximately $1 billion in combined payment and trading volume, showing steady growth beyond the company's traditional exchange business.
Why It Matters
Crypto adoption has traditionally focused on retail investors and institutions. AI agents introduce the possibility of an entirely new type of network participant—software capable of earning, spending, and transacting independently.
That shift could create fresh demand for blockchain-based payments, particularly for machine-to-machine transactions that require speed, global accessibility, and programmable settlement. Stablecoins and blockchain networks are well suited for these use cases, especially as AI applications become more autonomous.
Although challenges around security, regulation, and merchant adoption remain, Coinbase's latest expansion signals where the company believes the industry is heading. If AI agents become active participants in the digital economy, payment infrastructure
may prove just as important as the intelligence powering them—and Coinbase is positioning crypto to play that role.
