In a striking development in Toronto, Canadian authorities have pressed a total of 82 charges against seven suspects involved in the kidnapping of a cryptocurrency exchange owner. The case garnered significant attention as three suspects are reportedly members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Incident Unfolds in North York

The Toronto Police Service announced that the incident occurred on July 25 in the North York area of the city. As the victim was walking towards his car near Finch Avenue East and Bayview Avenue, he was forcibly abducted by a group of individuals.

According to the investigation, the suspects restrained and assaulted the victim. Police reports indicate that the perpetrators attempted to coerce him into granting access to his cryptocurrency assets and the security infrastructure of his business.

Toronto Police stated that the attackers sought access to the victim’s crypto holdings and business security tools.

Victim Released Without Clear Asset Loss

The victim was subsequently released but was threatened against contacting the authorities. Officials have not yet determined whether the suspects successfully acquired any cryptocurrency, with the investigation continuing into their intended targets.

The case files do not disclose the victim’s identity. Authorities are considering the incident not only for its physical violence but also for the cyber implications of the attempted access to digital assets.

Military Personnel Among Detainees

A particularly noteworthy aspect of the investigation is the involvement of three military personnel among the seven accused. These individuals have been identified as 22-year-old Talarambage Fernando, 29-year-old James Moreau, and 24-year-old Jack Miley by authorities. The Canadian Armed Forces encompass the nation’s army, navy, and air force.

Fernando and Moreau were arrested on August 11, while Miley was apprehended on September 24. The charges against these suspects include armed kidnapping for ransom, unlawful confinement, and other criminal allegations.

Authorities announced that three of the seven suspects are members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Details on Military Backgrounds Emerge

Canada’s Department of National Defence revealed that Fernando joined the reserve forces in January 2020 and had not been deployed on any assignments. Details about the service backgrounds of the other two military personnel remain undisclosed.

As the investigation unfolds, police have indicated that legal proceedings are ongoing, and the allegations remain subject to judicial review. The total number of charges filed in the case currently stands at 82.
