Elon Musk defended his roughly $908 billion fortune after Bernie Sanders criticized the concentration of his wealth, arguing that most of it is company stock rather than cash.
Key Points:
Musk says his wealth is concentrated in Tesla and SpaceX shares, not a large cash reserve.
Sanders says Musk owns more wealth than the bottom half of U.S. households combined.
Forbes estimates Musk’s net worth near $908 billion after sharp swings since Jun.
Musk-Sanders Clash
Sanders renewed his criticism of U.S. wealth inequality by arguing that Musk alone owns more wealth than the bottom 50% of American households.
Musk answered in a Sept. 5 post on X: “I have stock in SpaceX and Tesla, not some big pile of cash.” He added that shareholders, including retirement programs, benefit when the companies gain value.
The dispute goes beyond the size of Musk’s fortune because the two men are describing wealth in different ways. Sanders has spent 2026 advocating higher taxes on large AI companies to help fund a proposed $7 trillion public fund, while Musk focused on the difference between market value and spendable cash.
Forbes valued Musk at about $908 billion on Sept. 6, well below the roughly $1.1 trillion peak reported in Jun. His fortune then fell below $700 billion in Jul. before rebounding as Tesla and SpaceX shares recovered during August. That volatility is central to Musk’s defense.
SpaceX has traded on Nasdaq under the ticker SPCX since its Jun. listing at $135 a share, while Tesla remains another major component of Musk’s wealth.
Revenue expectations, delivery figures and daily share-price moves can therefore shift his estimated fortune even when he does not sell stock or receive cash.
That distinction does not answer Sanders’ broader argument about wealth concentration because publicly traded shares still represent assets with substantial market value. Musk briefly became the world’s first trillionaire in Jun., dropped below $700 billion in Jul. and returned to about $908 billion by early September after Tesla and SpaceX rebounded. The current dispute is unfolding against that rapid reversal.
