@FalconXGlobal and Ethena have established a $1 billion secured lending facility, putting the reserve assets backing the $USDe synthetic dollar to work in overcollateralized institutional credit. The deal, announced on August 19, is designed to give Ethena a new source of returns beyond traditional crypto basis trades.
How the Structure Works
Ethena will serve as lead lender on a revolving senior secured credit facility extended to FalconX International Lending Opportunities SPC.The Cayman Islands company will act for FalconX International Lending Opportunities SP 1, a segregated portfolio designed as a bankruptcy-remote vehicle within the FalconX group, which can use facility proceeds to acquire crypto-backed institutional loan receivables from two FalconX originators.
FalconX is originator, servicer, and collateral manager, with collateral held at qualified custodians.Ethena will receive a first-priority security interest over all assets held by the vehicle.Other debt at the vehicle will rank below Ethena's claim, while special-purpose-entity and separateness covenants are intended to limit exposure to financial problems elsewhere in the FalconX group. The loans are intended for trading, corporate treasury, and payments.
Diversifying Beyond Crypto Basis Trades
The companies presented the facility as a way for Ethena to earn returns outside crypto basis trades, whose funding rates can compress. Ethena founder Guy Young said the arrangement gives the protocol a secured channel into institutional credit, broadening its yield strategy. FalconX gets to scale its balance sheet, while Ethena gains access to FalconX's loan origination and secured lending expertise, potentially offering stronger risk-adjusted terms than other available arrangements.
The arrangement adds to Ethena's existing institutional lending program, which already includes partners like Anchorage Digital and Coinbase Asset Management. The structure is a warehouse, not a fund raise and not a redesign of $USDe. The two firms said the agreement builds on an existing relationship that they expect to scale over time.
