Internet Computer Hits 138.9 Million Daily Transactions

The Internet Computer (@dfinity) network logged a new performance milestone on September 23, processing 138.9 million transactions in a single 24-hour window. The surge pushed peak throughput to 1,608 transactions per second, marking a notable stress test for the $ICP architecture as activity on the network continues to climb.

The result adds to a string of strong on-chain metrics for the protocol in 2026. The Crypto Times reported in August that Internet Computer led several long-term transaction tables, with Token Terminal recording 449.5 billion cumulative transactions over three years. Earlier this year, the network crossed one billion transactions in a single quarter for the first time, according to Crypto News Navigator.

How ICP Handles Scale

Internet Computer is built to expand capacity horizontally. According to DFINITY, the network is divided into subnets, each functioning as a smaller blockchain that runs canister smart contracts across a selection of nodes. Adding new subnets is the primary mechanism for scaling throughput as demand grows, which is what makes a single-day spike of this size possible without a fundamental redesign of the protocol.

It is worth noting that transaction counting on Internet Computer differs from conventional blockchains. As The Crypto Times explained, Token Terminal converts pre-aggregated average transactions-per-second statistics into daily totals by tracking messages processed by canisters, rather than discrete user-initiated actions recorded in a block. That methodology means headline numbers are not directly comparable to figures from networks such as Ethereum or Solana, and should be read with that context in mind.

Still, the directional trend is clear. Whether measured in raw throughput, cumulative totals, or peak TPS, the Internet Computer network has been posting consistently stronger numbers throughout 2026. The latest 24-hour record reinforces that trajectory and will likely keep the protocol in focus as the broader market watches for on-chain fundamentals to translate into sustained token demand for $ICP.
