Ionic Digital disclosed in a filing dated November 4, 2026 that it sold approximately 25% of its bitcoin treasury after the close of the third quarter, converting roughly $62 million worth of bitcoin into cash. The company had held 2,954 bitcoin, valued at approximately $247 million, as of September 30, 2026, making this a meaningful reduction to a sizable treasury position rather than a marginal adjustment.
The sale comes against a backdrop of sharply declining mining revenue. The filing reports third-quarter mining revenue of just $5.1 million, down from $37.1 million in the same quarter of the prior year, a decline of more than 85%. That drop reflects pressures facing bitcoin miners more broadly, including rising network difficulty and competition for hashrate, though the filing does not break out the specific causes behind Ionic Digital’s particularly steep decline. A revenue decline of this size, well over four-fifths year over year, is large even by the standards of a historically volatile mining industry.
Despite the weaker mining revenue, the company’s balance sheet benefited from a $73.2 million gain on the fair value of its crypto holdings during the quarter, as bitcoin’s price appreciation over the period boosted the book value of the treasury even before the post-quarter sale. The company reported $381.4 million in cash on hand and approximately $630 million in total liquidity, with no outstanding debt, giving it a comparatively strong balance sheet despite the operating revenue decline.
Looking ahead, Ionic Digital guided to full-year 2026 mining revenue of between $15 million and $20 million, a figure that, if met, would represent a steep falloff from the company’s prior-year run rate implied by the third quarter’s year-over-year comparison alone.
Selling a quarter of a bitcoin treasury for cash, rather than holding the position through revenue weakness, suggests the company is prioritizing liquidity and balance-sheet flexibility over maximizing bitcoin exposure in the near term, a choice that leaves it with ample resources to cover operating costs even as mining revenue remains well below its prior-year level. The full filing is available on SEC EDGAR.
