South Korea's KB Securities has signed a memorandum of understanding with @Optimism and @Securitize to jointly develop a tokenized securities business targeting domestic institutional investors. The agreement was formalized on September 21, marking one of the most significant moves by a major Korean financial institution into on-chain finance.
Under the deal, each party takes a defined role. KB Securities will be in charge of product supply, drawing on its capabilities in underwriting, issuance, and sales of financial products and its institutional client base.@Securitize will provide tokenization infrastructure, while the Optimism Foundation will support the blockchain network.
KB Securities plans to first introduce a tokenized money market fund (MMF) and tokenized funds using flagship investment strategies of KB Asset Management for institutional clients.The company said it will gradually widen the range of assets to be tokenized to include stocks, American depositary receipts, corporate bonds, and treasury bonds, in step with the development of domestic rules governing tokenized securities.
@Securitize is already working with global financial firms including BlackRock, Apollo, BNY, Hamilton Lane, and KKR, giving KB Securities access to an established institutional tokenization platform with deep industry reach.
The choice of @Optimism's OP Mainnet as the underlying infrastructure reflects the network's growing appeal for institutional use cases. OP Mainnet is an Ethereum Layer 2 network that uses optimistic rollup technology to execute transactions faster and cheaper than Ethereum mainnet while anchoring final settlement to Ethereum's security.Gas fees typically run below $0.01 per transaction.
The three parties plan to build a framework covering everything from issuance to distribution of tokenized products for institutional investors. For KB Securities, the initiative represents a calculated first step in connecting Korea's established capital markets infrastructure with blockchain-based settlement rails, with room to scale as domestic regulatory frameworks for token securities continue to develop.
