Argentina loves crypto. It is not just a hobby there; for many, it is a tool for financial survival. As citizens look for ways to outrun fierce inflation and currency swings, the country has clocked roughly $93.9 billion in digital asset transactions over the past three years.

Crypto platform Nexo wants a bigger piece of that action. The company just rolled out its dual-mode debit and credit card in Argentina. The launch also marks a broader expansion in the region, with Buenos Aires becoming Nexo's regional hub for Latin America.

One Card, Two Modes

Most crypto cards are straightforward. You buy a coffee, the app automatically sells your Bitcoin, and the merchant gets paid in local currency. Nexo is trying a different angle with a single card that lets users flip between two distinct settings:

  • Debit Mode: You spend your digital assets directly for everyday purchases.
  • Credit Mode: You keep your crypto. Instead of selling it, you use it as collateral to back a line of credit.

The goal here is flexibility. Locals can access quick cash without losing their crypto positions. To jumpshift adoption, Nexo is offering a few perks for new Argentine users, including interest on platform balances and a three-month cashback promotional window.

A Changing of the Guard

This expansion comes with a shift at the top. On August 1, Andres Ondarra will take over as the General Manager for Nexo Argentina.

Ondarra is a veteran. He brings a 25-year track record across traditional banking, tech-driven finance, and crypto markets. He takes the wheel from Federico Ogue, who helped plant Nexo's flag in the country and is now leaving to build a new startup venture.

Argentine clients have spent a decade making digital assets part of how they manage wealth. The Nexo Card is built precisely for that letting them spend in debit mode, borrow against their holdings in credit mode, and earn from every transaction, all without having to sell. It's the freedom to live on that wealth, not just hold it," said Andres Ondarra, incoming General Manager, Nexo Argentina.

The Reality on the Ground: In stable economies, crypto cards are often a novelty. In Argentina, they are practical infrastructure. The race is heating up as exchanges and fintech apps scramble to build bridges between blockchain assets and everyday cash registers.

With Buenos Aires now serving as Nexo's regional launchpad, the company plans to build out local partnerships and customer support infrastructure across Latin America. Eligible users in Argentina can now apply for the card directly through the Nexo app.
