OKX CEO Star Xu has warned that the exchange could terminate accounts linked to high-risk or illegal activity, after a user said a transfer from a sports betting platform triggered a risk-control review. Xu said deposits connected to high-risk addresses can result in enhanced anti-money laundering checks, with some investigations lasting 15 days or more and potentially restricting access to accounts or funds while they are reviewed.

Xu also warned users about funds connected to Telegram escrow transactions, Huiwang and related services, saying they could carry significant source-of-funds risks. He urged customers not to use OKX for money laundering, fraud or illicit transfers, adding that accounts confirmed to be involved in illegal activity could be terminated.

Could OKX’s risk checks become a problem for legitimate traders?

OKX will have to tell the difference between a risky transaction and a normal one that looks suspicious. Since the exchange has warned that some checks could last 15 days or longer, users may not be able to use their funds as normal during that period. For active traders, that could mean missing a chance to sell, add money to a position or close a trade before prices move.

The impact could be bigger during periods of high market volatility. A trader who cannot access their account at the right time may have few options, even if the transaction that started the review was legitimate. This could be especially frustrating for users who regularly move money between several crypto platforms and wallets.

The goal will be to strengthen its checks without making the process too difficult for ordinary customers. How well OKX handles legitimate customers caught by these checks could become just as important as how many risky accounts it blocks.

Could stricter controls push crypto users towards DeFi?

OKX’s stricter controls could push some experienced crypto users towards self-custody and decentralized exchanges. Users who do not want an exchange to freeze their funds or close their accounts may prefer to keep their assets in their own wallets and use DeFi for some transactions.

Centralized exchanges give users customer support, account recovery and compliance checks, but they also have the power to review accounts, stop withdrawals and restrict access to funds. Decentralized exchanges work differently. Users connect their own wallets and trade through smart contracts, giving them more control over their funds. However, some tokens, wallets, interfaces and protocols can still be blocked or affected by sanctions and other rules. DeFi also gives users fewer options when something goes wrong, since there may be no company to contact or account team to resolve a problem.

More experienced traders may be comfortable managing their own wallets, while newer users and institutions may prefer centralized exchanges because they provide help when problems occur.

What OKX’s warning means for crypto users

OKX’s warning may make users think differently about how they use exchanges. Some traders could start keeping only the money they need for active trading on an exchange rather than treating it as a long-term place to store their crypto.

It may also affect how people compare exchanges. Fees and trading options could become less important if users place more value on clear rules, reliable customer support and how an exchange treats its customers.

The development also puts pressure on other exchanges. If one major platform becomes more aggressive in identifying high-risk funds, competitors may have little incentive to adopt weaker controls, particularly as regulators continue pushing crypto companies towards traditional AML standards.

Meanwhile, OKX has regained access to South Korea’s Google Play Store just four days after its Android app was removed. The return allows South Korean users to download the app and receive updates, making OKX the first major overseas crypto exchange to regain access after restrictions affected dozens of foreign trading platforms.
