Ondo Finance, a company focused on the tokenization of real-world assets, has launched the Ondo Network, an offchain execution platform, signaling a move away from its previously announced institution-focused layer-1 blockchain initiative for 2025.
Offchain Execution with Secure “Enclaves”
According to the company, the new Ondo Network executes trades off public blockchains, with its technology currently powering Ondo Perps, the firm’s perpetual futures trading platform. Unlike traditional blockchains that rely on broad, distributed networks of computers for transaction validation, the Ondo Network operates its trading operations within a single, protected computing environment called “enclaves.” In crypto, these are also known as Trusted Execution Environments.
Within this setup, a group of approved operators verifies that the trading software remains unchanged. Each operator controls a portion of the digital key necessary for authorizing transfers, adding a layer of security to the offchain transaction process.
Ondo Finance confirmed that, while trades are conducted offchain, transfers are ultimately finalized and recorded on public blockchains. The firm did not publicly disclose the identities or the number of operators coordinating these validations.
Transition from Blockchain Ambitions
This new approach marks a significant shift from Ondo’s earlier plans. In February 2025, the company had introduced Ondo Chain as a layer-1 blockchain designed for tokenizing traditional financial assets. Now, representatives describe Ondo Network as a continuation of this concept, but clarified that it does not currently operate as a blockchain.
Ondo’s leadership stated the system “isn’t a blockchain today; it doesn’t need to be.”
Looking ahead, the company indicated the possibility of adding more operators, increasing the volume of activity recorded on public blockchains, and potentially requiring network participants to post tokens as collateral. However, no timeline or concrete milestones were provided for these future developments.
Recent Testnet Progress
Ondo Chain achieved testnet status in early 2025. During this phase, major financial players such as JPMorgan’s Kinexys and Chainlink took part in the platform’s first transaction, which involved the settlement of a tokenized US Treasury. This collaboration highlighted ongoing experimentation by financial institutions with asset tokenization infrastructure.
While Ondo continues to progress on solutions that connect traditional finance with the blockchain ecosystem, new platforms are also emerging to support these initiatives. For example, 1stepSwap provides users the ability to access and trade shares of prominent U.S. companies and commodities like gold and silver directly from their wallets. This is enabled by the transfer of real-world assets onto blockchain networks, eliminating complex intermediaries. 1stepSwap stands out for its automatic price comparison capability, offering users the best market rates and increased portfolio diversification within seconds.
