Ripple (@Ripple) and South Korean securities firm Meritz Securities will explore custody and tokenization services for the country's capital markets. The plans centre on Ripple Custody and Ripple's tokenization infrastructure, and the work will begin within Meritz's existing business and under current regulations.
What the agreement covers
The agreement was signed on October 1 at Meritz's headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, with Meritz CEO Jang Won-jae and Ripple President Monica Long attending. Meritz disclosed it publicly on October 7, according to Parameter and Crypto Briefing.
Ripple Custody provides infrastructure for institutions to store and manage digital assets. Ripple has been pairing it with tokenization services for banks and other regulated financial firms, according to Blockonomi. The two companies plan to widen their cooperation in stages as South Korea's digital asset framework develops, per CoinGape.
The deal is exploratory. Crypto Briefing reports that it does not commit to a commercial product launch and does not name specific digital assets the firms will support. Parameter also notes that XRP integration remains unspecified.
Meritz's wider digital asset plans
Meritz is also exploring other digital asset businesses as South Korea prepares to bring them further into its regulated financial system. These include spot crypto ETFs, fractional investment products, security tokens, digital asset trading platforms and Korean won-denominated stablecoins, according to Crypto Times. That outlet adds that the announcement did not confirm plans to launch any of these products through Ripple.
CoinGape reports that this is Ripple's fourth South Korean partnership this year, following Kyobo Life Insurance, Kbank and Jeonbuk Bank. Crypto Briefing describes it as Ripple's first tie-up with a Korean securities firm.
For institutional investors and market participants, the main point is timing. Meritz is positioning itself ahead of expected rule changes, while the scope of any live services is still undecided. Further details on products or timelines have yet to be announced.
