Robinhood, one of the leading American fintech platforms known for its popular brokerage app with more than 28 million users, has selected Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin as a main settlement mechanism within its operations. Ripple President Monica Long outlined the reasons for this major integration, highlighting the increasing demands from large-scale institutional investors for comprehensive blockchain solutions rather than isolated token offerings.
Strategic partnership targets institutional solutions
Monica Long stated that Robinhood’s decision to collaborate with Ripple on stablecoin integration signals a shift towards advanced, integrated products that meet the needs of institutional capital. Long emphasized that significant market players are no longer content with speculative digital assets but seek technologies capable of underpinning both customer-facing and fundamental financial operations.
Monica Long underscored the importance of the partnership, noting that collaboration with a platform serving 28.6 million investors demonstrates rapidly expanding institutional interest in integrated digital asset solutions, and showcases Ripple’s ability to address this demand with robust infrastructure.
According to Long, this partnership aligns with a global transition in fintech priorities, where end-to-end, enterprise-ready systems are essential for major companies operating at scale. She linked the deal to changing requirements within the fintech industry, where seamless settlement and operational efficiency are now a top priority.
Robinhood is not merely adding RLUSD as another listed asset. Instead, the broker is moving critical back office operations onto blockchain rails, utilizing Ripple’s technologies to modernize and automate core settlement processes.
Tech integration: RLUSD, XRP Ledger and beyond
The RLUSD stablecoin is based on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a distributed blockchain network designed for fast, low-cost asset transfers. Robinhood uses Bitstamp, a well-established cryptocurrency exchange specializing in institutional settlements, to handle RLUSD operations on-chain, thereby increasing the practical use of the ledger in a real-world context.
Mini dictionary: RLUSD is Ripple’s US dollar-pegged stablecoin, launched in December 2024. It is built on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), enabling seamless, blockchain-based transactions tailored to both institutional and individual users.
Robinhood’s integration extends beyond settlement. The company is adopting Ripple Treasury, a solution for automated cash flow forecasting, internal liquidity management, and netting of intra-company obligations. This further supports Robinhood’s drive for efficiency as it scales blockchain infrastructure across its platform.
Ripple Prime, another service tailored for institutional clients, provides Bitstamp with credit facilities on over 20 assets. This feature supports Bitstamp’s anticipated launch of perpetual futures trading, enhancing credit access and deepening market liquidity for these derivatives.
Market backdrop and executive perspective
Robinhood’s head of crypto, Johann Kerbrat, echoed Long’s assessment of the current environment. He remarked that stablecoin value now depends on its tangible business utility, not only its technological promises. Kerbrat described the evolving toolkit as a prototype for a “connected, global financial system.”
Johann Kerbrat reflected on the partnership by highlighting that the blended solution with Ripple demonstrates a move from isolated tokens to unified systems, providing new efficiencies for Robinhood’s operations.
The move comes as the global market for regulated blockchain-based financial products continues to expand. Stablecoin transaction volumes now top $300 billion globally. RLUSD’s market capitalization surpassed $2.4 billion since its December 2024 debut, solidifying its status as a major settlement asset within Robinhood’s treasury operations.
