Search interest in the Social Security COLA 2027 announcement date surged Tuesday, with Google Trends showing more than 50,000 searches as beneficiaries look ahead to the final inflation data that will determine next year's increase.

The key date is October 14, 2026. That is when September consumer-price data are scheduled for release, providing the final number needed to calculate the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment. The higher payments will take effect with benefits payable in January 2027.

Current forecasts point to a COLA of roughly 3.4% to 3.6%, above the 2.8% increase applied for 2026. Coinpaper's latest COLA forecast shows how estimates have narrowed as the first relevant inflation reading arrived.

August and September Inflation Still Matter

The official adjustment is not based on headline CPI or a forecast. Social Security uses the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W, averaging its July, August and September readings and comparing that figure with the same quarter a year earlier.

July's CPI-W rose 3.4% year over year, helping push the latest projected increase into the mid-3% range. Coinpaper's recent 3.6% estimate followed that reading after earlier projections had reached 3.8%.

Two pieces of data remain. The BLS calendar schedules August CPI for September 11 and September CPI for October 14, both at 8:30 a.m. ET. Only after the September report can the final COLA be calculated.

What a 3.6% COLA Could Mean

Using an illustrative monthly benefit of $2,084, a 3.6% adjustment would add roughly $75 per month, lifting the payment to about $2,159 before deductions.

Actual payments will differ by beneficiary, and Medicare premiums can absorb part of the increase.

The changing forecasts also show why early estimates should be treated cautiously. An earlier COLA outlook put the range at 3.6%–3.8% before July inflation was incorporated.

For beneficiaries, October 14 is therefore the date that matters most. Until then, 3.4%–3.6% remains a forecast rather than an official Social Security increase.
