A single number continues to surface in XRP discussions: $1,000. Crypto Enthusiast Eira questioned the need for XRP to reach $1,000 or even $10,000, asking why the token needs such a high valuation in the first place. Eira put the question: “Why does XRP itself need value?”

The Supply Argument

Eira’s X post laid out the math. XRP has a total supply of 100 billion tokens. SWIFT processes $5 trillion in daily transaction volume. If XRP handled that entire volume, Eira calculated the price might only reach $50. Eira then tested other scenarios.

Doubled transaction volumes over 5 to 10 years. Ripple withholding half the supply to create scarcity. Under those conditions, Eira estimated a price near $100, still far below $1,000. Eira also compared XRP to Ethereum, noting that ETH reached $4,000, then questioned whether Ripple’s centralized structure changes that comparison.

Liquidity Over Price

Tom Keteleer responded directly to the core assumption in Eira’s post. Keteleer explained that XRP doesn’t need to equal the value it moves because the same tokens can recirculate within seconds.

Keteleer stated, “A higher price improves liquidity, but nothing mathematically requires $1,000.” Keteleer also addressed the Ethereum comparison, arguing that ETH’s $4,000 price carries no relevance to XRP because Ethereum’s supply is far smaller.

Demand From Banking Adoption

TheGoodson offered a different view rooted in institutional adoption. TheGoodson explained that widespread bank usage would require a higher price to accommodate large transaction volumes. TheGoodson explained that a one-to-one usage model would leave insufficient XRP in circulation, and rising transaction volume would demand a higher token value to compensate.

Expanding the Addressable Market

Tony challenged the framing of XRP and Ripple as identical entities. Tony wrote, “Ripple is centralized, XRP and the XRPL is not.” Tony agreed that $50 could theoretically support $5 trillion in volume if all 100 billion tokens were in use.

Tony then expanded the scope beyond SWIFT, listing the DTCC, government adoption, and derivatives markets as additional sources of volume. Tony pointed to derivatives figures ranging from $10 trillion to $30 trillion as a factor that could push required liquidity, and by extension price, well beyond initial estimates.

Diverging Conclusions

The comments reveal a divide in how XRP’s value gets calculated. Keteleer’s position rests on reusability, the idea that a fixed supply doesn’t need to match transaction volume dollar-for-dollar because tokens move repeatedly within short windows.

TheGoodson’s position rests on scale, arguing that adoption volume alone will force prices upward regardless of reuse speed. Tony’s position expands the addressable market beyond SWIFT alone, incorporating clearing houses, government use, and derivatives trading as additional demand sources.

Each argument relies on different assumptions about supply behavior and transaction volume, leaving the $1,000 target as a matter of ongoing calculation rather than settled consensus.
