TLDR
- XRP Ledger developers have proposed SponsoredAccountCreate to allow new wallets to open without holding XRP.
- The proposal would let sponsoring accounts cover reserve requirements while users retain control of their wallets.
- Ripple’s partnership with Privy targets embedded wallets for XRP, RLUSD, and automated payments.
- The Sponsor amendment had 10 supporting validator votes on October 28, below the 29 needed for approval.
Developers working on the XRP Ledger have proposed a way to open accounts without placing XRP in each wallet. The change would let payment apps create accounts while another wallet pays the network’s required reserve.
New XRP Ledger Account Transaction
A proposal filed on October 15 adds a transaction called SponsoredAccountCreate. An existing account could use it to create a wallet with a zero XRP balance and pay the reserve on its behalf.

Today, new accounts must hold at least 1 XRP. Existing sponsorship designs still require a tiny XRP payment to open a new account. The reserve limits the creation of unused accounts and stays unavailable for spending while the account remains open.
A business opening 100,000 wallets currently needs 100,000 XRP for its basic reserves. Under the proposal, its sponsoring account would carry that requirement instead of funding every new wallet separately.
Separately, an October 23 report said XRP Ledger stablecoin supply fell 13.19% in one week to about $999.9 million. RLUSD accounted for most tokens on the network at that time.
The wider Sponsored Fees and Reserves system would also let sponsors pay transaction charges. Wallet owners would keep control of their private keys, while the network would still account for reserve costs.
Payment Services Add Wallet Support
Ripple’s recent partnership with Stripe-owned Privy aims to bring wallets into payment apps. Developers could support XRP, the RLUSD stablecoin and payments made automatically by software agents.
Separately, Ripple and Robinhood expanded RLUSD services on October 27. Their agreement includes institutional settlement through Bitstamp and plans to make RLUSD available in Robinhood’s main app later this year.
The account-creation code remains an open proposal. An automated review identified two unresolved findings involving account validation and transaction cleanup. Developers must also rely on sponsorship rules that have not activated on the main network.
Recent activity includes BNY’s expanded XRP and RLUSD custody services, announced October 27. The bank now supports both assets for eligible institutional clients, while Ripple and BNY plan to explore trade finance on the ledger. The Sponsor amendment had 10 votes from 35 trusted validators on October 28, compared with 11 on October 19. It needs 29 votes maintained for two weeks before activation.
