Algorand says organisations should not wait until 2029 to start moving to quantum-safe cryptography. In a blog post dated October 27, 2026, Chief Product Officer Will Beaumont (@wj_beaumont) argued that deferring the upgrade builds up what he calls security debt for @Algorand ($ALGO) and the wider industry.
Why Algorand Says the Deadline Is Earlier Than 2029
Beaumont wrote that databases, communication protocols, trust frameworks and nearly every major blockchain rely on classical cryptography that quantum computers threaten to break, with some estimates placing such machines as early as 2029. He also acknowledged that those are the most pessimistic estimates.
His argument centres on migration time. The more relevant date for today's systems is that day minus however long the migration takes. He said the point is not to panic. In his words, debt carries interest, and deferring quantum migration accrues it in at least two ways.
The scale of the work is a key part of the case. According to the post, a signature change touches key formats, address schemes, database schemas, hardware security module configurations, custody workflows and audit tooling. Blockchain.News reported that the post frames quantum migration as a multi-year operational change affecting wallets, custody, smart contracts, reporting pipelines and third-party integrations.
The timeline remains uncertain. Blockchain.News noted that Algorand presents 2029 as a planning horizon, not a verified breakout point. The same report said the GAO has stated that timelines for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer remain uncertain.
What Algorand Has Already Deployed
Algorand's own documentation says it introduced State Proofs in 2022, compact certificates that attest to the ledger's state every 256 rounds. These are signed using Falcon, a post-quantum digital signature scheme.
The network later extended this to user accounts. On November 3, 2025, the first quantum-resistant transaction was executed on Algorand's mainnet using a Falcon logic-signature template. The approach is optional. Standard transactions still use Ed25519, and the consensus-layer VRF remains classical.
That means protection is not yet network-wide. Nervos, in a review of quantum-resistant projects, noted that State Proofs and Falcon verification are live, while native account support and consensus-related cryptography remain on the roadmap.
The Algorand Foundation has set out further plans. On June 18, it published a post-quantum roadmap committing the chain to broad quantum resilience by the end of 2027. Cointelegraph reported that the Foundation's technology chief, Bruno Martins, said the updates aim to give the network broad quantum resilience.
Other networks are also working on the issue. Reuters reported that the Ethereum Foundation says it is targeting 2029 for full protection from quantum computing.
