Aptos Foundation, a Layer 1 blockchain originally incubated at Meta, has completed its four-year token unlock schedule for core contributors and early investors.

The schedule concluded as planned, following the timeline published at mainnet launch in October 2022. No genesis tokens allocated to either group remain to be unlocked.

When a blockchain launches, its creators typically set aside a portion of tokens for the team that built it and the investors who funded it.

These tokens are “locked” and released gradually over time, a vesting schedule, to prevent insiders from dumping large amounts onto the market at once.

Aptos set a four-year schedule: no tokens for the first 12 months, then a gradual monthly release through month 48.

What the numbers look like

At genesis, core contributors were allocated 190 million APT and early investors received 134.78 million APT, a combined 324.78 million tokens, roughly 32.5% of the 1 billion APT minted at launch.

With those two groups fully vested, monthly scheduled token releases drop from approximately 11.31 million APT to 4.54 million APT, a reduction of about 60%, according to the Aptos Foundation’s tokenomics update.

Only the Community and Foundation pools remain on the unlock schedule, each releasing 1/120 of its remaining balance monthly through 2032.

Roughly 331.69 million APT of the genesis supply stays locked across those two pools.

A broader supply overhaul running alongside

The unlock conclusion is part of a wider tokenomics restructuring approved through on-chain governance.

The Foundation has permanently locked and staked 210 million APT, about 37% of its mainnet holdings. A hard cap of 2.1 billion APT now bounds total issuance.

Annual staking rewards were cut from 5.19% to 2.6%, and gas fees were raised tenfold with all fees burned.

Decibel, an onchain perpetual futures exchange incubated by Aptos, is projected to burn more than 32 million APT annually as it scales.

That could exceed the roughly 19.8 million APT minted through staking each year.

The milestone came on the same day Aptos launched its encrypted mempool on mainnet.
