Bitcoin's on-chain activity climbed to its highest level of 2026 after the ongoing Coldcard hardware wallet exploit prompted many users to move their holdings. K33 reported that around 890,000 BTC moved on-chain during the past seven days, marking the highest seven-day active supply recorded this year.

The surge came despite relatively calm market conditions. Bitcoin has traded within one of its narrowest price ranges since 2023, indicating that network activity has accelerated even as price volatility remains subdued.

Coldcard Exploit Triggers a Wave of Bitcoin Transfers

The surge in Bitcoin transfers appears to be closely tied to the ongoing Coldcard security incident. The exploit affected wallet firmware that generated seed phrases with insufficient randomness, allowing attackers to reconstruct private keys and gain access to vulnerable wallets.

The incident is estimated to have resulted in the theft of approximately 1,596 BTC from around 7,300 addresses. Separate findings from Galaxy Research suggest multiple attackers exploited the vulnerability, with total losses potentially increasing if additional cases are confirmed.

The breach prompted many users to move their Bitcoin into newly created wallets or explore alternative custody options, including centralized exchanges and multisignature setups.

Market Activity Reflects Changing Investor Behavior

Periods of unusually high seven-day active supply have historically appeared around local market tops and bottoms. Similar patterns were observed during the 2022 bear market, the 2024 and 2025 bull markets, and the current 2026 market cycle.

While elevated on-chain activity does not necessarily predict future price movements, it often reflects shifts in investor behavior. During market downturns, holders may transfer Bitcoin to exchanges to reduce risk, while stronger markets can encourage both profit-taking and buying driven by fear of missing out (FOMO).

Hardware Wallet Security Remains Under the Spotlight

The Coldcard exploit has renewed discussions about hardware wallet security and firmware verification. Emergency firmware updates have been released for affected devices, but wallets created before the fix still require users to generate new seed phrases and transfer their Bitcoin to newly secured wallets.

Although elevated on-chain activity alone cannot determine where Bitcoin's price will move next, the latest surge highlights how security incidents can quickly influence investor behavior. As the investigation continues, market participants are likely to keep a close watch on both blockchain activity and developments surrounding the Coldcard exploit.
