  • Bitcoin recovered to $84,355 on October 21, gaining 1.72% in 24 hours as the cryptocurrency market capitalization reached approximately $2.8 trillion.
  • Historical BTC and S&P 500 drawdowns highlight the risk that weakness in U.S. equities could undermine the cryptocurrency’s recovery.
  • The Federal Reserve’s October 28 policy decision could influence Treasury yields, the dollar and investor demand for risk assets.

Bitcoin climbed back above $84,000 on Wednesday, recovering a closely watched price level as cryptocurrency markets advanced. Yet the rebound comes with a broader vulnerability: renewed weakness in the S&P 500 could challenge Bitcoin’s recovery even if trading conditions within the digital asset market continue improving.

The contrast between Bitcoin’s price recovery and the wider financial environment is becoming increasingly relevant. Historical episodes of simultaneous losses in cryptocurrencies and U.S. equities suggest that the next major test may come from changes in global risk appetite rather than Bitcoin-specific trading activity.

Bitcoin’s $84,000 Recovery Faces a Test From U.S. Equities

Bitcoin’s relationship with the S&P 500 provides a useful framework for assessing the strength of the current rebound.

Historical market data tracked by CryptoQuant show periods when substantial equity-market weakness coincided with sharp Bitcoin declines. Two examples stand out: the final quarter of 2018 and the market turbulence of early 2025.

CryptoQuant chart comparing Bitcoin's cumulative returns, S&P 500 performance, and changes in US 10-year Treasury yields from 2018 to 2026. Bitcoin, S&P 500, and US 10-year Treasury yield trends from 2018 to 2026.

During late 2018, the S&P 500 fell sharply as investors reassessed monetary policy, economic growth and corporate earnings. Bitcoin also experienced significant losses, although its decline reflected additional cryptocurrency-specific pressures following the 2017 market cycle.

A different combination of economic and policy concerns unsettled markets in early 2025. Bitcoin and U.S. equities both experienced pronounced volatility as investors adjusted their exposure to risk-sensitive assets.

The episodes do not demonstrate that the S&P 500 consistently leads Bitcoin or that a comparable decline is inevitable. Their relevance lies in the transmission of financial-market stress across asset classes.

When equity investors become more defensive, selling can extend beyond stocks. Portfolio deleveraging, margin requirements and demand for liquidity may prompt reductions in cryptocurrency exposure, particularly where leveraged positions are involved.

That creates an important distinction for the current recovery. Bitcoin can display improving technical momentum while remaining vulnerable to a deterioration in conditions outside the cryptocurrency market.

Treasury Yields Are a Two-Sided Risk

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield complicates the relationship between Bitcoin and equities.

Higher yields can increase the opportunity cost of holding assets that do not generate contractual interest payments. They also influence borrowing costs and the discount rates used to value future corporate earnings, potentially weighing on equity valuations.

For Bitcoin, that pressure is indirect but meaningful. A repricing of U.S. stocks can weaken risk appetite and reduce demand for volatile assets.

However, declining Treasury yields are not automatically bullish.

If yields fall because investors anticipate slower economic growth or seek safety during a market selloff, Bitcoin may decline alongside equities despite lower government borrowing rates.

This distinction matters when comparing 2018, 2025 and the present market. The direction of Treasury yields is less informative than the economic expectations behind the move.

A correlation coefficient also needs careful interpretation. Although an 84% relationship between Bitcoin and the S&P 500 has been cited in market commentary, the available data do not establish its calculation period or methodology. It would therefore be inappropriate to present that figure as a verified measure of current correlation.

The defensible conclusion is narrower: Bitcoin has shown meaningful exposure to equity-market stress during previous drawdowns, and that exposure remains a risk worth monitoring as prices recover.

Derivatives Activity Suggests Rapid Repositioning

The latest cryptocurrency derivatives figures provide a different perspective on Bitcoin’s advance.

Aggregate 24-hour derivatives volume increased 7.69% to approximately $770.4 billion, while open interest rose 1.44% to $393.58 billion, according to CoinMarketCap.

That is a difference of 6.25 percentage points between the two growth rates. Volume expanded approximately 5.3 times as quickly as open interest in percentage terms.

Volume captures trading activity, including positions being opened and closed. Open interest measures contracts that remain outstanding. Consequently, the figures are consistent with substantial turnover without an equally large increase in outstanding exposure.

The reported volume-to-open-interest ratio stood near 1.96. This is a useful measure of activity relative to positioning, although its interpretation depends on the exchanges, contracts and reporting methodologies included in the aggregates.

Short liquidations may also have contributed to the advance, as forced closures of bearish positions can accelerate upward price movements. However, the available figures do not establish how much of Bitcoin’s gain resulted directly from liquidations rather than discretionary buying.

Coinglass market tracking shows that the open-interest series has not fully returned to its earlier October highs, even as Bitcoin has recovered.

CoinGlass chart showing Bitcoin's price, futures open interest, and trading volume from September 19 to October 21, 2026, with BTC trading near $83,000. Bitcoin price, open interest, and trading volume trends from September 19 to October 21, 2026.

This does not prove that leverage has been eliminated or that a new bullish trend is established. It indicates that price and outstanding derivatives exposure have not recovered at the same pace.

For a more convincing continuation, traders would want to see sustained spot-market demand alongside orderly positioning, rather than an advance dependent primarily on forced buying.

The October 28 Fed Decision Adds Another Risk

The Federal Reserve’s next policy meeting, scheduled for October 27–28, could reshape the financial conditions influencing both Bitcoin and U.S. equities.

A Reuters survey conducted October 16–20 found that 94 of 100 economists expected the Fed to leave its benchmark interest-rate range unchanged at 3.75%–4.00% in October, with further tightening anticipated in December.

That makes the Fed’s guidance on future policy especially relevant. A pause accompanied by warnings about persistent inflation could still pressure risk assets if investors respond by pricing in higher yields or a longer period of restrictive monetary conditions.

The policy backdrop is already complicated by inflation concerns. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly indicated earlier in October that additional rate increases might be needed, although she saw no urgency to act at the upcoming meeting.

For BTC, the important transmission channels are Treasury yields, dollar strength and equity valuations. A sharp repricing in any of those markets could offset improving cryptocurrency demand.

The October meeting therefore creates a defined period in which Bitcoin’s recovery will be tested against developments beyond its own market.

Ethereum Rebounds From Ascending Support as RSI Improves

Ethereum climbed above $2,500 on October 21 after rebounding from an ascending support trendline connecting recent October lows. The recovery suggests that buyers are defending progressively higher support levels despite the broader decline from late-September prices.

On Coinbase’s daily chart from TradingView, ETH traded at approximately $2,504, gaining 2.22% during the session and reaching an intraday high of $2,508. The price remained above the ascending support line, although the daily candle had not yet closed.

TradingView daily Ethereum (ETH/USD) chart showing a recovery to $2,504, a break above a descending trendline, and RSI rising to 49.44. Ethereum breaks above its short-term descending trendline as RSI approaches neutral territory.

Momentum indicators also showed improvement. The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) rose to 49.44, above its moving average of 40.28. This indicates recovering buying momentum, although the RSI remained slightly below the neutral 50 level.

The ascending trendline is the key technical reference. Holding above it would preserve the developing pattern of higher lows and support another attempt to advance beyond $2,500. A sustained break below the trendline, particularly alongside a loss of the $2,400 area, would weaken the recovery and increase the risk of a move toward $2,300.

Ethereum’s ability to defend this support provides a useful secondary measure of market strength as Bitcoin consolidates above $84,000.

What Would Confirm Bitcoin’s Recovery?

Bitcoin’s next move can be evaluated through a combination of price action, derivatives positioning and equity-market performance.

  • Holding $84,000: Sustained trading above the reclaimed level would support a challenge of $85,000. A daily close would provide more meaningful confirmation than an isolated intraday move.
  • Losing $84,000: A return below the threshold would weaken the immediate recovery and shift attention toward the previous trading range.
  • Watching the S&P 500: Continued equity-market strength could reinforce demand for risk assets. A sharp correction, particularly alongside rising funding pressures or forced deleveraging, would increase the likelihood of renewed Bitcoin volatility.

The central question is no longer simply whether Bitcoin can trade above $84,000. It is whether the recovery can withstand a potential change in the broader financial environment.

The October 28 Fed decision will provide an important test of that resilience.
