BlackRock Sells Bitcoin AGAIN! (Numbers Are Worrying)
CryptoCompass editorial visual for bitcoin coverage.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust recorded another sizable redemption on October 16, with $71.8 million leaving IBIT as institutional crypto flows remained weak.

The headline can sound more dramatic than the underlying mechanics. This was not evidence that BlackRock itself made a proprietary decision to dump Bitcoin. ETF investors redeemed shares, forcing the fund structure to reduce the Bitcoin backing those shares. IBIT accounted for most of the $82.4 million in total U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF outflows that day.

That distinction is important, but the flow still tells us something about demand.

Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs Had a Difficult Week

From October 12 through October 16, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded:

  • October 12: -$65.4 million
  • October 13: +$175.7 million
  • October 14: -$261.4 million
  • October 15: +$5.1 million
  • October 16: -$82.4 million

That leaves Bitcoin ETFs with roughly $228.4 million in net withdrawals across the five sessions.

Ethereum funds performed even worse. Spot ETH ETFs lost approximately $320.1 million over the same period, with only October 13 finishing positive. October 16 alone produced another $69.7 million withdrawal, reportedly entirely from BlackRock’s ETHA.

Combined, Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs lost about $548.5 million from October 12 through October 16.

What Does BlackRock’s Bitcoin Outflow Mean?

The timing comes during a difficult period for crypto. Bitcoin dropped below $80,000 this week as hotter inflation and economic data increased concerns that U.S. rates could remain elevated.

ETF redemptions can add another source of spot selling when markets are already weak.

Still, one week of withdrawals does not mean institutional demand for Bitcoin has disappeared. IBIT remains by far the largest U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF, with about $62.5 billion in net assets and cumulative inflows of roughly $65.6 billion since launch.

The more useful signal will be whether ETF flows recover as Bitcoin stabilizes. Continued withdrawals would reinforce the current risk-off environment, whereas renewed inflows could indicate that investors are beginning to use the latest decline as an entry point.
