  • Cardano celebrates six years since Shelley introduced staking, decentralized block production, and community governance, reshaping the network’s long-term development path.
  • Shelley enabled stake pools to replace centralized validation, helping Cardano build 2,882 active pools supporting 21.56 billion ADA in commitment.
  • Input Output is testing Ouroboros Leios to increase base-layer throughput while preparing the Dijkstra upgrade for Cardano’s next phase.

Cardano has marked six years since the Shelley upgrade introduced staking and decentralized block production, a milestone that reshaped the blockchain’s governance model. The anniversary also highlights how the network has progressed from its early infrastructure into a more decentralized ecosystem supported by community participation.

According to the Cardano community in a post on X, Shelley brought stake pools, staking rewards, and decentralized block production to the network. The post also noted that Cardano has operated without interruption since the Byron hard fork introduced those changes.

Before Shelley, Cardano relied on a federated structure where only a small number of nodes produced blocks. However, the Byron reboot prepared the network for decentralization by replacing the original node software with a modular implementation designed to support future protocol upgrades.

Shelley completed that transition by allowing ADA holders to delegate their tokens to stake pools, strengthening network security while expanding community involvement. Consequently, Cardano established the foundation for a decentralized proof-of-stake ecosystem that remains central to its development strategy.

Shelley Legacy Supports Cardano’s Scaling Roadmap

Cardano reached another milestone in the first quarter of 2021 when stake pool operators assumed responsibility for producing every new block. That achievement completed the network’s move away from centralized validation and reinforced its decentralized governance model.

According to Cexplorer data, Cardano currently has 2,882 active stake pools with approximately 21.56 billion ADA committed as live stake. Those figures demonstrate sustained participation from validators and delegators while supporting the blockchain’s long-term security.

Meanwhile, Input Output has shifted development toward Ouroboros Leios, the protocol expected to become Cardano’s largest scaling upgrade. Engineers have already launched Leios on the public Musashi Dojo testnet, where developers are evaluating its performance under different network conditions.

The testing process follows five phases named Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void. Each stage measures protocol stability before developers consider the upgrade ready for production.

Input Output estimates that Ouroboros Leios could increase Cardano‘s base-layer throughput between five and twenty times. Additionally, the Van Rossem hard fork, activated earlier this month, established the technical foundation for the Dijkstra era upgrade, which will introduce Leios to the mainnet.

Conclusion

Six years after Shelley transformed Cardano’s staking model, the network continues building on that foundation through larger scalability initiatives. The Leios upgrade represents the next stage of Cardano’s roadmap as developers work to increase transaction capacity while maintaining the decentralized principles established through the Shelley era.
