Coinbase has launched pre-IPO perpetual futures, with SpaceX as the first market, giving eligible traders outside the United States synthetic price exposure to private companies before they list publicly.

The product is built as a USDC-settled perpetual futures contract. It trades 24/7, has no expiry, and lets users open or close positions like other perps on Coinbase. If SpaceX completes an IPO, the contract is designed to transition into a SpaceX stock perp without traders needing to roll into a new market.

That gives the launch a clear headline: Coinbase is letting crypto traders trade SpaceX price expectations before the company reaches public equity markets. The important catch is that this is not SpaceX stock. The SpaceX Pre-IPO Perp carries no equity ownership, voting rights, dividends, share delivery, or entitlement to actual SpaceX shares.

How the SpaceX Pre-IPO Perp Works

Before an IPO, the contract references SpaceX’s total equity valuation instead of a normal per-share stock price. That structure is useful because a private company’s final public share count is usually not locked until late in the IPO process.

Coinbase’s model uses a valuation-based index before the listing. After IPO terms become public, the contract can be rebased into a standard per-share stock perp. The result is a two-stage market: first a private-company valuation trade, then a public-equity-style perp if the company lists.

The structure also introduces risks that do not exist in a normal large-cap stock market. Coinbase’s pre-IPO perps can use leverage of up to 5x, while private-market valuation updates, IPO filings, thin liquidity, funding rates, mark-price gaps, and liquidation mechanics can all hit positions before a public ticker exists.

Crypto Exchanges Push Into Private-Market Hype

The Coinbase launch lands as crypto-native platforms race to turn private-company valuations into always-on markets. SpaceX-linked products have already become a major pre-IPO price discovery theme, while Hyperliquid has become a weekend and after-hours perps hub for traders looking beyond standard crypto pairs.

Binance has also seen demand grow around TradFi perps and pre-IPO exposure, while Ondo is preparing wider 24/7 equity-linked perpetual markets. The shared direction is clear: crypto exchanges are no longer only competing on Bitcoin, Ethereum, and altcoin liquidity. They are trying to become the first liquid markets for assets that traditional finance keeps gated, delayed, or fragmented.

For Coinbase, SpaceX is a high-profile first listing. For traders, the live market turns private-company hype into a leveraged USDC contract where funding, liquidity, mark price, and liquidation risk matter long before any public SpaceX stock begins trading.
