Consensys Software Inc. is dividing into two independent companies.
MetaMask keeps the brand and becomes a standalone, consumer-focused wallet business.
Linea and Consensys’s institutional and protocol work move into a separate entity; the company has not confirmed IPO plans.
Consensys, the company Joseph Lubin built into one of Ethereum’s largest infrastructure players, is splitting itself in two. MetaMask, its wallet product and by far its most recognizable brand, becomes an independent company focused purely on consumers. Everything else, including the Linea network and Consensys’s institutional and protocol business, moves into a separate entity that keeps the Consensys name.
The split effectively demotes “Consensys” from umbrella brand to back-office label and promotes “MetaMask” to the company’s public face, a reversal of how the two names have related for most of the past decade. It also draws a cleaner line between two businesses that had been growing in different directions: a mass-market wallet with tens of millions of users, and an institutional infrastructure and Layer 2 operation serving banks and enterprises.
Consensys has stayed quiet on whether either entity is heading toward a public listing, and the restructuring itself was not framed as an IPO precursor. What it does clarify is accountability: each business now has its own cap table, its own leadership incentives, and its own reason to either raise money or eventually go public on its own timeline, rather than sharing one balance sheet with a very different kind of business.
