Hardfork Closes the Door on Malicious Validators

@Coredao_Org completed an emergency hardfork upgrade on September 3, resuming staking reward issuance after a brief but disruptive validator incident. The upgrade followed an episode in which validators claimed more $CORE than the protocol intended, prompting Core DAO to coordinate an emergency hard fork. The issue was contained by September 1, 2026, and affected only reward distribution, not user funds or network security.

The fix took the form of an emergency hard fork coordinated directly with Core's validator set, structured as a forward-only upgrade, meaning no transactions were rolled back and no user assets were at risk. The project has not disclosed how many validators exploited the issue, how long the abnormal reward claims continued, or the total amount of $CORE involved. A full technical postmortem is still pending.

In the lead-up to the upgrade, Coinbase, Bithumb, and other exchanges restricted $CORE deposits and withdrawals, citing security concerns.Coinbase paused sends and receives on Core, while Bithumb and Coinone suspended deposits and withdrawals, and Bitget halted $CORE deposits and withdrawals citing wallet maintenance. Exchange deposits resumed at a high rate once the hardfork was confirmed stable.

Market Responds Sharply to Rewards Resumption

The return of normal staking rewards triggered an immediate market reaction. Per CoinMarketCap, $CORE trading volume surged by more than 170% in the 24 hours following the upgrade, with the token's price rising approximately 4% on the day. The combination of restored staking incentives and renewed exchange deposit activity appears to have been the primary catalyst for the volume spike.

$CORE carries a hard cap of 2.1 billion tokens, with roughly 40% allocated to node mining rewards distributed over an 81-year emission schedule, making the integrity of that reward mechanism central to the token's long-term value proposition. The swift resolution of the validator exploit and the smooth execution of the hardfork has, at least in the short term, reinforced confidence in the network's governance and response capabilities.

Core DAO's proactive approach to fixing the validator reward bug reflects a responsible governance model, and while the temporary suspension of $CORE on major platforms caused some disruption, the transparent handling of the issue is likely to strengthen the network's credibility in the long run.
