Key Insights:

  • Binance hack has an estimated $6.3 billion impact, with approximately $3 billion frozen through industry-wide intervention.
  • Wintermute and GSR confirmed limited exposure, while Ethena, Lido, and Aave reported no direct exposure.
  • Binance says its SAFU fund and company funds will cover losses, maintaining that customer funds remain safe.

Crypto news around the reported Binance hack has put several major protocols under scrutiny, although their exposure levels differ. The leading crypto exchange estimates the incident’s impact at $6.3 billion, says nearly $3 billion has been frozen, and maintains that user funds are safe.

Binance Hack Puts Major Crypto Firms Under Scrutiny

Binance hack has raised concerns across the crypto industry, with several firms now clarifying their exposure. However, the available statements show that not every company faced direct losses or operational problems.

Per the crypto news, Wintermute reported that its exposure remains below 20% of its net equity. Its CEO, Evgeny Gaevoy, also said the situation would not disrupt the firm’s operations under any scenario.

Similarly, GSR placed its exposure below 5% of net equity. The firm does not expect any material disruption to its normal business activities. It also confirmed that it is working with contacts at Binance to understand what happened.

Meanwhile, Ethena, Lido and Aave reported no direct exposure to the incident. Ethena explained that its collateral involving exchange exposure remains with off-exchange custodians. This means the assets are not held directly on exchanges.

Lido also confirmed that stETH remains unaffected. Its staking and withdrawal services continue to operate normally. Furthermore, Lido Earn has no direct exposure to the incident.

Notably, Aave reported that its contracts remain unaffected and its positions are still overcollateralized. However, the protocol introduced precautionary restrictions across all DAO-operated V3 and V4 markets.

Crypto News Tracks $6.3 Billion Outflow And Asset Freezes

According to CryptoQuant, the incident began with a transaction on October 29 at 20:24 UTC. The Binance 14 wallet reportedly transferred 167,464 ETH, approximately $1.6 billion in USDT, and 63 other tokens.

Binance’s initial investigation suggests that a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop may have allowed an attacker to access a service container. This access allegedly enabled unauthorized withdrawal transactions.

Importantly, Binance said it had found no evidence of compromised wallet private keys. The company has promised a detailed technical post-mortem after completing its investigation and verifying the facts.

CryptoQuant traced approximately $6.3 billion in assets from Binance-labeled wallets across several blockchain networks. Ethereum accounted for $3.53 billion, while Bitcoin recorded $1.45 billion.

Tron accounted for another $628 million. Meanwhile, Arbitrum, Optimism and Base together recorded approximately $38 million. The industry also moved quickly to restrict some affected assets. Tether froze 1.567 billion USDT, while Circle froze more than 800 million USDC.

Additionally, Arbitrum’s Security Council locked 74.6 million ARB and 8,425 ETH. Binance subsequently reported that approximately $3 billion had been frozen on-chain. These actions represent nearly half of the estimated impact. However, not all remaining funds have been recovered, making Binance’s response especially important.

SAFU Fund To Cover Remaining Binance Hack Losses

Binance has stated that it will cover all losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds. The exchange has also maintained that customer assets remain safe.

CryptoQuant reported that the SAFU fund holds approximately 15,000 BTC, worth around $1.18 billion at the time of its assessment. Binance’s own funds are expected to cover the remaining estimated $2.1 billion.

The exchange also pointed to its October 1 proof-of-reserves. Per crypto news from CryptoQuant, Binance held $151.5 billion in its eight largest user assets, with reserves covering customer balances at 1:1 or higher.

Against that figure, the reported $6.3 billion impact represents approximately 4.2% of those holdings. After the reported freezes, the remaining amount falls to around 2.2%. After accounting for the SAFU fund, CryptoQuant estimated the remaining company-funded amount at approximately 1.4%.

Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while security checks continued. It also revoked the authorization for the affected address and contacted law enforcement agencies.

Still, the exchange is working with blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover the funds. Co-CEO Yi He expects withdrawals to resume within 48 hours.

The Binance hack incident has also renewed concerns about security risks within centralized exchanges. Although the Binance exploit has affected a large amount of assets, the statements from exposed firms show different levels of risk.
