CZ warns that AI is making cyberattacks easier after Binance’s $6.3B security incident, calling for a crypto-wide cybersecurity alliance.
Changpeng Zhao (CZ), co-founder and former CEO of Binance, has spoken publicly for the first time since Binance suffered a reported $6.3 billion security attack on October 29. In an interview on the Talking Tokens podcast, CZ warned that artificial intelligence (AI) is making cyberattacks easier to execute, forcing companies to rethink their cybersecurity strategies.
AI IS ACCELERATING CYBER THREATS
CZ pointed to a series of recent security incidents across the cryptocurrency industry, including an AI-assisted attack targeting blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis and a security breach involving approximately $46 million at Brazilian exchange Mercado Bitcoin. These incidents highlight how cyber threats are becoming an industry-wide concern rather than an isolated problem.
Recalling the Binance incident, CZ said he was in the United Arab Emirates when he received news of the attack around midnight. His primary responsibility was communicating with the community, while Binance’s internal teams focused on containing the attack, limiting losses, and protecting user assets.
He believes the market remained relatively stable following the incident, with the exchange even experiencing net inflows. He attributed this resilience to Binance’s response, financial capacity, and the trust users have placed in the platform.
However, CZ cautioned that companies should never become complacent about cybersecurity. Many security incidents could potentially be prevented if organizations dedicated sufficient resources and attention to protecting their systems.
According to Binance’s previously released investigation report, the attackers infiltrated an employee’s computer by impersonating recruiters before using internal AI tools to expand their access. Binance also disclosed that it had detected and blocked 57 suspected cyberattacks linked to North Korea in 2026.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has rejected allegations by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) that a North Korea-backed hacking group was responsible for the recent attack on Binance.
In a statement published Tuesday by North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim accused the United States of attempting to portray North Korea as a “cybercrime state.” She dismissed Washington’s claims that it had intelligence linking North Korean hackers to the incident as absurd allegations, adding that such accusations were nothing new.
Kim further described the U.S. allegations as a political provocation intended to damage North Korea’s international reputation. She also referenced the February 2025 Bybit hack, in which approximately $1.5 billion was stolen, noting that the FBI had similarly blamed North Korea for that incident—a claim she also denied.
CZ CALLS FOR AN INDUSTRY-WIDE CYBERSECURITY ALLIANCE
Beyond strengthening individual companies’ defenses, CZ called for the cryptocurrency industry to establish a cross-company cybersecurity alliance.
The proposed initiative would allow companies to share attack reports and defensive strategies, conduct mutual security audits, and coordinate efforts to freeze stolen assets more quickly. Such collaboration could strengthen the industry’s overall ability to respond to cyber threats.
CZ emphasized that cybersecurity is not something companies can complete simply by meeting a particular standard. Instead, it requires continuous investment, monitoring, and improvement.
He also warned that the growing connections between cryptocurrency, stablecoins, tokenized stocks, real-world assets (RWAs), and traditional finance mean that major security incidents could have consequences far beyond individual companies or the crypto sector.
As digital assets become increasingly integrated into the global financial system, cybersecurity could eventually become a matter of national security rather than merely an industry-specific concern.
CZ said he had not contacted Donald Trump or other U.S. officials regarding the incident, but noted that Binance and the broader cryptocurrency industry would welcome government assistance.
Finally, CZ highlighted AI’s dual role in cybersecurity. While the technology makes launching cyberattacks easier, it can also help companies identify software vulnerabilities earlier and strengthen their defenses. He added that combining AI with blockchain technology could potentially support faster transactions in the future.
