With October beginning on a volatile note, Ethereum has managed to stabilize around the $2,500 mark, currently trading at $2,511.53, marking a 0.08% increase over the past 24 hours. The cryptocurrency oscillated between $2,490 and $2,530 throughout the day. Amid signs of a potential rebound in institutional inflows, futures contracts show a notable accumulation in long positions.
Historical Patterns Echo in Current Market Dynamics
Recent market formations echo those seen prior to Ethereum’s substantial rally last year. Back in 2025, Ethereum traded sideways in the mid-$2,000 range before experiencing a brief dip below support, which it quickly recovered from, triggering a stronger upward trajectory. Presently, Ethereum has again approached the $2,400 to $2,300 area, prompting scrutiny over whether buyers will reclaim this zone.
Analyst Ash Crypto suggests that the recent pullback could serve as a liquidity cleanse rather than indicate a fundamental breakdown, provided Ethereum maintains its current level.
“The recent retracement appears more like a liquidity sweep than a structural break, necessitating price stability above the current range,” said Ash Crypto.
In the past recovery cycle, Ethereum’s momentum was not unidirectional. Initially jumping past $3,000, it plateaued mid-range before ascending to approximately $4,800. Should a similar structure unfold in 2026, the $4,600 to $4,800 range could re-emerge as a focal point, contingent on preserving the current base.
Bitfinex Sees Long Positions at Peak Levels
Bullish sentiment in derivative markets has strengthened. According to data shared by Crypto Rover, Ethereum long positions on Bitfinex have surged to a four-year apex. This increase, amid the cryptocurrency’s consolidation around $2,500, indicates some investors are amplifying positions in anticipation of a breakout.
Notably, Bitfinex is a preferred platform for professional investors dealing with significant volumes, making shifts in leveraged positions on this exchange a key indicator of market sentiment.
“Data reveals Ethereum long positions on Bitfinex have peaked at a four-year high, signaling early positioning for a potential upward move,” highlighted Crypto Rover.
Institutional Activity Sees Limited Recovery
On the institutional side, a modest recovery has been noted. On October 13th, U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs recorded a net inflow of $24.84 million, halting a 10-day streak of outflows.
Noteworthy contributions to this inflow included $16.73 million into Grayscale’s mini Ethereum ETF and $8.11 million into Fidelity’s FETH product, contrasting the earlier session’s net outflow of $85.43 million and a five-day cumulative outflow reaching $576.9 million.
Whales Maintain Cautious Stance Despite Improved Outlook
Nonetheless, not all indicators present a universally positive picture. Delta metrics, tracking the divergence between whale and retail investor activities, remain below zero. This suggests large players continue to hold more substantial short positions than individual investors.
Encouragingly, an improvement from more negative levels seen in September is evident. CW8900 data indicates a reduction in whale short positions, implying a slight easing in their defensive posture, yet not a definitive shift toward bullish trends.
In the short term, the $2,400 to $2,500 range remains a critical support level. Regaining $2,600 could turn attention to $2,700 and eventually $3,000. Conversely, a breach of $2,400 without immediate recovery heightens the possibility of deeper corrections.
