BUZZ HPC, a sovereign AI cloud and high-performance computing (HPC) provider and a wholly owned subsidiary of HIVE Digital Technologies (Nasdaq: HIVE), signed Canada's Responsible Data Centre Development Principles on Sep. 8, joining a list of signatories that includes Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI.
The principles, published by Canada's federal government on Sep. 3, set a national framework for how data centers should be built and operated across the country.
Data centers are large facilities filled with servers that store, process and move the digital information behind everything from banking and healthcare to artificial intelligence. As demand for AI infrastructure grows, so does the strain these facilities place on local electricity grids, water supplies and communities.

The framework lays out five core principles. Data centers must create lasting local benefits including jobs, training and tax contributions. They must not shift electricity costs onto Canadian households or existing businesses. They must minimize freshwater use and environmental impact.
They must be transparent about local effects on power, water, noise and emissions. And they must deliver strategic value to Canada through investment, supply chain participation and digital resilience.
Craig Tavares, President and COO of BUZZ HPC, said the company views the principles as a foundation for building an industry critical to Canada's competitiveness.
"Canada does not have to choose between building the digital infrastructure our economy needs and building it responsibly," Tavares said in the government's published signatory list.
BUZZ HPC is notably the only signatory with roots in the cryptocurrency mining industry.
HIVE Digital Technologies, its parent company, operates Bitcoin mining and data center facilities across Canada, Sweden and Paraguay.
The signing comes weeks after BUZZ HPC announced a $350 million, five-year AI cloud services deal powered by NVIDIA GPUs at its facility in Merritt, British Columbia.
