Filecoin preserves archives, science data and public records by keeping copies with independent storage providers and checking those copies with cryptographic proofs. Each file gets a content identifier (CID), a digital fingerprint that changes if the file changes. The Internet Archive, the Government of Bermuda and researchers at Cornell University all use the network.

The Solstice upgrade went live on Oct. 19 and ties a growing share of block rewards to paying customers.

How Does Filecoin Store Data For The Long Term?

Filecoin is a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN). Independent providers store data and earn FIL, the network’s token. Three features support preservation:

  • Replication: Copies sit with several providers, so one outage does not cut off access.
  • Content addressing: Any change to a file produces a different CID, which exposes tampering.
  • Storage proofs: Proof of Replication (PoRep) confirms a provider stored the data it claims. Proof of Spacetime (PoSt) shows it stays stored. Proof of Data Possession (PDP) is a lighter daily check on Filecoin Onchain Cloud, where payments stop if proofs stop.

Storage runs on deals. Data cannot be altered or deleted during a deal, the Filecoin Foundation says, so long-term preservation means keeping deals active. Rival Arweave sells a pay-once model aimed at permanent storage.

Who Uses Filecoin To Preserve Public Records?

Three projects show how.

Democracy’s Library

This Internet Archive project collects government documents and research from around the world. It has uploaded multiple pebibytes to Filecoin, according to Filecoin Foundation for the Decentralized Web (FFDW). One pebibyte (PiB) is about 1,126 terabytes. The collection includes the End of Term Web Archive, which saves U.S. government websites when administrations change.

Government Of Bermuda

Bermuda said in January 2026 that it was uploading public data to Filecoin through Democracy’s Library. The first datasets are employment and labor publications.

MuckRock

This public records platform has put more than 1.34 million documents from newsrooms and researchers on Filecoin, FFDW reports.

How Does Filecoin Protect Cultural Archives?

The Filecoin Foundation said in September 2025 that more than 1 million culturally significant artifacts were on the network. Examples include:

  • Prelinger Archives: More than 1,500 archival films uploaded.
  • Rohingya Project: Digitized records of stateless Rohingya culture.
  • Starling Lab: A 22-petabyte node at USC Libraries holding parts of the USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive.

What Science Data Does Filecoin Store?

Decentralized science, or DeSci, uses open networks to store and share research. Filecoin archives large datasets:

  • Cornell University: Astrophysicist Drummond Fielding’s simulations produce over 5 petabytes per run. He archives raw output on Filecoin.
  • Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute: More than 125 tebibytes of cardiac data.
  • University of Maryland: Its EASIER Data Initiative shares crop classification and Earth observation data.
  • Earth Species Project: BEANS-Zero, a benchmark dataset for animal-sound AI.

How Does Solstice Change Filecoin Tokenomics?

Solstice changes who earns block rewards:

  • Miner share: The consensus share of each block reward falls from 95% to 50% over about nine quarters.
  • Service share: Orchestrators, registered groups that bring in paying customers, start at 5% and reach 10% after the first quarter. Their share then grows only when settled payments hit fixed dollar targets. Unclaimed rewards burn after that first quarter.
  • Filecoin Plus (Fil+): This human review program for a 10x reward multiplier has ended. Every new sector now gets 10x.

Vesting for Protocol Labs and the Filecoin Foundation ended on Oct. 15. Block rewards of about 21 million FIL a year are now the only new supply, cutting gross issuance by about 75%.

Paid use remains small. Filecoin Pay had an annualized run rate of about $138,000 across 149 active payers on Oct. 17, up from $663 and 73 in January.

Nick Carpinito of Blockworks called the mechanism “coherent on paper” in a report commissioned by Filecoin, but said it has not yet shown real demand will move it. The first measured check comes around April 29, 2027. Filecoin Foundation President Marta Belcher said the community’s focus has shifted from growing supply to scaling demand.

Conclusion

Filecoin lets archives store copies with independent providers, detect changed files through CIDs and check storage through onchain proofs. It holds government records, more than 1 million cultural artifacts and university research data. Since Solstice, a growing reward share depends on settled payments, which remain small.
